Özet

Demografik büyüme, hızlı kentleşme ve tüketim miktarındaki artış, son on yıllarda atık üretimindeki artışı tetiklemektedir.

Demographic growth, rapid urbanization, and increasing consumption patterns in recent decades have caused a significant increase in the generation of waste worldwide. The increasing amount of waste has become an important environmental concern because it affects resource depletion, pollution, and inefficiencies in waste handling and recovery processes. Recycling activities play a pivotal role in mitigating these environmental challenges by conserving natural resources and reducing ecological damage. Among recyclable materials, wastepaper is widely utilized in the production of new items because of its availability, ease of collection, and compatibility with various industrial processes. Cardboard products derived from recycled paper, especially in the packaging sector, have gained prominence due to their versatility, cost-effectiveness, and environmental advantages. Several studies have emphasized that although recycling offers notable environmental advantages, it may also contribute to the accumulation of heavy metals in recycled materials. Zinc, aluminum, copper, cadmium, lead, and chromium are among the heavy metals that may threaten human health when found in packaging materials that interact with food either directly or indirectly. The level of metal contamination depends on the origin of the recycled paper, the chemicals used in processing, and the environmental conditions during recycling. Therefore, monitoring heavy metal concentrations in recycled paper-based packaging is essential to ensure consumer safety and compliance with national and international regulations. In this study, the total concentrations of potentially toxic metals in cardboard egg trays made from recycled paper were determined, and the associated potential risks to human health were evaluated. The study aimed to provide detailed data regarding the concentrations of potentially toxic metals in recycled paper packaging materials, to assess whether these products meet regulatory standards, and to contribute to sustainable packaging practices. Ten different cardboard egg tray samples were obtained from manufacturers operating in various regions of Turkey to capture a representative variation in production practices. Levels of aluminum (Al), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), and cadmium (Cd) were measured using Inductively Coupled Plasma – Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES), a precise and sensitive analytical method extensively applied in multi-element analyses within environmental and food safety research. Prior to analysis, approximately 1.0 g of each dried sample was prepared and digested with 8 mL of a HNO₃–H₂O₂ mixture (6:2, v/v) for 10 minutes. Microwave-assisted digestion was then performed according to a pre-established program suitable for wastepaper samples: 1000 W for 10 minutes, followed by 1000 W for 20 minutes at 200 °C. Once cooled, the digested solutions were adjusted to a final volume of 25 mL using 1 M HNO₃. Method validation was performed by applying the certified standard NIST SRM 1573a, and the recovery rates were evaluated. For each metal, the lowest detectable concentration, linearity range, calibration equation, and correlation coefficient were evaluated. Cr exhibited the lowest detection limit, whereas Cd had the highest. The strong correlation coefficients obtained for all metals indicate that the analytical method produced reliable and precise results. The measured concentrations of metals in the egg trays were as follows: Al 0,955–1,598 mg/kg, Cd 0,00005–0,0005 mg/kg, Cr 0,00298–0,00870 mg/kg, Cu 0,0162–0,0395 mg/kg, Pb 0,00788–0,03225 mg/kg, and Zn 0,01855–0,07370 mg/kg. All examined samples contained detectable levels of Al, Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr, and Cd. All analyzed samples showed concentrations that were safely below the regulatory limits specified by the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & HealthCare (EDQM), European Union legislation, and the Turkish Food Codex (TGK). The results indicate that cardboard egg trays produced from recycled paper under current production conditions do not pose are considered safe for human consumption from a health perspective. Variations in metal concentrations among samples may reflect differences in the source material, manufacturing processes, and regional production practices. The concentrations of heavy metals in recycled packaging materials are influenced by factors such as material composition, the chemicals used in pulping, and the effectiveness of washing and deinking processes. The study emphasizes the need for consistent monitoring and quality assurance practices to ensure safe levels of heavy metals. Continuous evaluation of recycled material sources can help minimize contamination and guarantee adherence to regulatory requirements. Furthermore, the combination of microwave-assisted digestion and ICP-OES analysis proved to be an effective and reliable method for quantifying heavy metal content in recycled paper materials. Lead and cadmium are capable of accumulating in the human body, where they may pose significant health risks. Therefore, ensuring that recycled packaging materials are free from harmful levels of these metals is critical. By maintaining heavy metal concentrations below regulatory limits, manufacturers can provide safer products to consumers while contributing to sustainable packaging practices. From an environmental perspective, recycling paper reduces the demand for virgin resources, decreases energy consumption, and minimizes waste sent to landfills. Safe and controlled recycling processes help achieve environmental sustainability without compromising human health. This work presents detailed data on heavy metal concentrations in cardboard egg trays made from recycled materials and demonstrates that, under controlled production processes, these materials can be considered safe for food packaging applications. However, this study highlights the necessity for regular monitoring, rigorous assessment, and standardized regulation of analytical methods. Subsequent studies may focus on identifying other heavy metals, examining long-term migration patterns under food-contact conditions, and assessing different recycling strategies to improve safety while promoting sustainability. Implementing robust monitoring frameworks together with sustainable manufacturing approaches can support eco-friendly production processes and help protect consumer health. In summary, when adequate control and monitoring measures are applied, packaging materials produced from recycled paper can both lessen the environmental burden of increasing waste and provide the food sector with safe, sustainable, and economically efficient packaging alternatives.
