Özet

Bu tez, güncel sanat pratiklerinde mekânın verili fiziksel bir plan olmanın ötesinde duyusal deneyim, bedensel bellek ve etkileşim ağları üzerinden sürekli biçimlenen çok katmanlı bir inşa süreci olduğunu savunmaktadır. Araştırmanın temel amacı, mekânın estetik deneyim içindeki kurucu rolünü fenomenolojik yaklaşımlar ve güncel sanat kuramları bağlamında tartışmak; sanatçı, izleyici ve mekân arasındaki çok katmanlı ilişkiyi kuramsal ve uygulama temelli bir perspektifle ortaya koymaktır. Çalışmanın kuramsal çerçevesi, mekânı mutlak, homojen ve edilgin bir kap olarak tanımlayan kartezyen anlayışın ötesine geçerek; mekânın algı, yaşantı ve bedensel deneyim yoluyla kurulduğunu savunan ilişkisel ve fenomenolojik yaklaşımlar temelinde yapılandırılmıştır. Görmeye dayalı statik mekân anlayışının, güncel sanatta çok duyulu, atmosferik ve ilişkisel bir mekân deneyimine dönüştüğü savunulmuştur. Ayrıca mekânsal algının yalnızca zihinsel bir temsil değil; motor hareketler, kinestetik duyumlar ve bedensel bellekle şekillenen bütüncül bir süreç olduğu, nörobilimsel yaklaşımlar doğrultusunda ele alınmıştır. İnceleme kapsamında arazi sanatı, mekâna özgü enstalasyon, performans, kamusal alan müdahaleleri ve sanal mekân pratiklerinden seçilen örnekler üzerinden sanatçı, yapıt ve mekân arasındaki sınırların geçirgenliği incelenmiştir. Tezin uygulama boyutunda ise atölye deneyimleri ve kişisel sanat üretimleri ele alınmış; ışık, zaman, hareket ve boşluk unsurlarının mekânın algısal ve fiziksel sınırlarını nasıl dönüştürdüğü irdelenmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular, mekânın güncel sanatta önceden verili, sabit bir nesne değil; izleyicinin bedensel katılımı ve algısal etkileşimiyle tamamlanan, anlık ve süreğen biçimde kurulan canlı bir deneyim alanı olduğunu göstermektedir. Bu doğrultuda izleyici, pasif bir gözlemci konumundan çıkarak, mekânsal deneyimin ve anlamın üretiminde etkin bir özne ve ortak bir fail olarak konumlandırılmaktadır. Bu tez, mekânı estetik, ontolojik ve toplumsal boyutlarıyla bir arada ele almakta; güncel sanat pratiklerinde mekân odaklı üretimlere ilişkin deneyim ve etkileşim temelli, çok katmanlı bir okuma önermektedir.

This thesis examines how the concept of space in contemporary art practices has moved beyond being a neutral and physical background for the placement of objects to become a dynamic process that is continuously re-produced through bodily perception, sensory experience, and social interaction. The primary aim of the study is to discuss the constitutive role of space within aesthetic experience through phenomenological approaches, neuroscientific perspectives, and contemporary art theories, and to articulate the multilayered relationship between artist, viewer, and space through both theoretical and practice-based inquiry. The theoretical framework of the study moves beyond the Cartesian/Newtonian understanding of space as an absolute, homogeneous, and passive container, and is grounded in relational and phenomenological approaches that conceptualize space as constructed through perception, lived experience, and embodied engagement. It is argued that the visually oriented and static conception of space has evolved in contemporary art into a multisensory, atmospheric, and relational spatial experience. Furthermore, drawing on neuroscientific approaches, spatial perception is addressed not merely as a mental representation, but as a holistic process shaped by motor actions, kinesthetic sensations, and embodied memory. Methodologically, the study adopts an a/r/tographic (artistic research) approach that brings together theoretical analysis and artistic practice, demonstrating that knowledge is produced not only through textual analysis but also through processes of making and spatial experience. Within this scope, selected examples from land art, site-specific installations, performance, public space interventions, and virtual spatial practices are examined to analyze the increasing permeability of the boundaries between artist, artwork, and space. The practice-based component of the thesis focuses on the researcher's studio experiences and personal artistic productions, investigating how elements such as light, time, movement, and void transform the perceptual and physical boundaries of space. The findings indicate that, in contemporary art, space is not a pre-given or fixed entity, but a living experiential field that is constituted and completed through the viewer's bodily participation and perceptual interaction, both momentary and continuous. In this respect, the viewer is repositioned from a passive observer to an active subject and a co-agent in the production of spatial experience and meaning. In conclusion, this thesis addresses space through its aesthetic, ontological, and social dimensions, and proposes a multilayered, experience- and interaction-based reading of space-oriented production in contemporary art practices.
