This study examines the identity, historical development, belief and halakhic system, and social position of the Sadducees, a Jewish sect active during the last two centuries of the Second Temple Period. The Sadducees represented an aristocratic class belonging to the wealthy and priestly class. Their priestly origins enabled them to rise to a position of decisive authority within the temple structure, which constituted the institutional center of Jewish society. This social and religious position also led the Sadducees to be inclined to cooperate politically with both the Hasmonean rulers and the Roman authorities. Although the origins of the sect cannot be definitively determined, it is generally believed that their name derives from Zadok, the High Priest who served during the time of King David. However, it is accepted that the Sadducees gained an independent sectarian identity during the Hasmonean period, following the Maccabean Revolt in the 2nd century BCE. With the destruction of the Beit ha Mikdash in 70 CE, the Sadducees withdrew from the historical stage and gradually ceased to exist. The aim of this study is to identify the Sadducee identity, history, fundamental beliefs, and halakhic system. Within this framework, the primary sources used are the works of Josephus, the Gospels and Patristic texts, Rabbinic texts, and the Qumran texts. It is generally accepted that the Pharisees played a role in the arrest, trial, and punishment of Jesus Christ. However, since the Sadducees were another group active in the temple besides the Pharisees, their role will also be examined to reveal the Sadducee identity. In this context, the dimensions of the interaction between the Sadducees and Jesus Christ are discussed within the framework of the debate over whether it was the claim of messiahship or his relationship with the Temple that was decisive in Jesus Christ's punishment. Furthermore, the possible connections between Sadducee teaching and contemporary Judaism and its denominations are also evaluated. The study consists of three sections. The first section covers the Sadducee identity and its historical development, the second section examines the religious, philosophical, political, and social dynamics that shaped Sadducee beliefs and halakha, and the third section addresses Sadducee beliefs and halakha. The study concludes that the Sadducees fundamentally accepted the Torah as authority; however, in some beliefs and halakhic practices not explicitly stated in the Torah, they resorted to their own unique methods of interpretation in addition to literal interpretation. In terms of belief, their rejection of the belief in resurrection and their emphasis on human free will are among the main characteristics that distinguish them from other Jewish sects of the period. Sources show that the Sadducees had various disagreements with the Pharisees regarding worship and temple practices, purification rituals, Shabbat observances, and issues related to civil and criminal law.
