In this study, enamel hypoplasias observed in the Yoncatepe Urartian Period and Contemporary Period populations, which lived in the same location in different periods, were evaluated, and it was aimed to assess the physiological stress processes experienced by these communities during infancy and childhood. Therefore, the frequency of these stress indicators observed in dental enamel is considered an important parameter in the evaluation of physiological stress patterns. In addition, by determining pathologies such as dental caries, abscess, tooth wear, alveolar bone loss, and dental calculus, it was aimed to obtain data on dietary practices and food diversity. This study fundamentally aims to reveal the changes in the lifestyles of Yoncatepe populations from the Urartian Period to the Contemporary Period. In this study, 783 dental materials from the Urartian Period group and 78 dental materials from the Contemporary Period group were examined in terms of enamel hypoplasia using the methods of FDI (1982), Brothwell (1981), and Goodman & Rose (1990). Other dental pathologies were evaluated using the method of Brothwell (1981). The significance of the relationship between the obtained prevalences was tested using the Chi-square (χ2) test. According to the findings of the study, enamel hypoplasia was assessed at a rate of 23.5% in the Urartian Period population and 24.7% in the Contemporary Period iv population, and hypoplasias were most frequently observed in the canine tooth group. It was observed that in the Urartian Period population, females (13.9%) had a higher rate than males (8.6%); whereas in the Contemporary Period, males (28.3%) had a higher rate than females (1.7%). In both populations, it was determined that enamel hypoplasias consisted of one or two bands, generally showed a mild course, and were localized in the gingival region and on the buccal surfaces of the teeth. The bandshaped enamel hypoplasias identified in Yoncatepe populations were also examined in terms of age of occurrence. In the Urartian Period population, the first occurrence of enamel hypoplasia took place between 0–0.5 years of age and reached its first peak between 2–2.5 years, while the period of intense exposure to physiological stress was between 4–5.5 years. In the Contemporary Period population, enamel hypoplasia began between 1.5–2 years of age and reached its first peak between 2–2.5 years. It was determined that the most intense formation of enamel hypoplasia occurred between 4–4.5 years. Other examined dental pathologies indicated an increase in dental caries and dental calculus rates in the Contemporary Period. As a result of the study, the prevalence, severity, and recurrence frequency of hypoplasia in Yoncatepe populations indicate that the physiological stresses experienced were at a mild level. This suggests that living standards were relatively better compared to other Anatolian populations. In addition, it can be suggested that enamel hypoplasias developed due to infectious diseases experienced during childhood. In this respect, the Urartian and Contemporary Period populations show similar characteristics in terms of enamel hypoplasia prevalence and etiology. However, when other dental pathologies are evaluated, it can be stated that the Contemporary Period population increased the proportion of carbohydrates in their diet compared to the Urartian Period population. Furthermore, it is considered that plant-based and animal-based foods were present in a balanced manner in the diets of Yoncatepe populations.
