Energy is a fundamental element that ensures the sustainability of life and enhances the level of societal welfare. For this reason, energy efficiency has become a strategic objective for countries due to its critical role in the effective operation of various systems. In addition to its economic dimension, energy efficiency plays a vital role in reducing environmental degradation and combating climate change. Through the efficient use of energy resources, it contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the overall carbon footprint of nations. Accordingly, international agreements and national regulations increasingly emphasize energy-efficient practices across all sectors. The construction sector and the buildings erected within its scope are among the leading contributors to high energy consumption. Buildings require significant amounts of energy throughout their life cycle, from the construction phase to operation and maintenance processes. Unplanned urban development practices and improper material selection are among the primary causes of high energy consumption in this sector, while insufficient consideration of climatic conditions during the design phase further increases operational energy demand. Therefore, integrating energy efficiency principles into the early stages of building design has become not merely a preference but a necessity. This thesis examines the effects of controlled material selection in construction practices on building energy consumption. The study particularly focuses on the impact of building envelope components on thermal performance and total energy demand. The aim of the research is to determine how energy efficiency can be achieved in new buildings through appropriate material selection. In this context, the study not only evaluates current construction practices but also proposes alternative material combinations aimed at improving performance outcomes. Within this scope, energy performance calculations were carried out for Block A1 of the Phase 2 Earthquake Housing Project constructed in the Gölbaşı district of Adıyaman Province. The selection of this project as a case study is significant due to its recent construction and its representation of contemporary housing practices in the region. In the analyses, the BEP-BUY application, an extension of the BEP-TR2 software approved by the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Environment,Urbanization and Climate Change, was utilized. This software enables the evaluation of building energy performance within a standardized framework in compliance with national legislation and allows for the comparison of different design alternatives. In the study, the selected building was modeled in the BEP-BUY environment by entering the required data into the interface. In order to obtain accurate simulation results, architectural characteristics, material properties, climate data, and mechanical system details were defined within the system. Subsequently, the building's energy performance was calculated through the relevant interface, and a sample Energy Identity Certificate was generated. This certificate presented fundamental data regarding the building's annual energy consumption and energy efficiency classification. Subsequently, various wall system combinations were developed based on the masonry, insulation, and cladding materials present in the exterior wall system of the building, and the energy performance values of each system were calculated. The selected masonry materials within these systems included brick, aerated concrete, and concrete block. These materials are commonly used as wall masonry in the province of Adıyaman. Additionally, stone wool was chosen as the thermal insulation material, which is also frequently employed in exterior facade applications in the region. Furthermore, the optimum insulation thicknesses of 8 and 9 cm, as specified in the TS 825 standard for Adıyaman, served as a guideline in the system combinations. Finally, marble and travertine cladding materials were included in the analysis. Marble was preferred due to its widespread use in Adıyaman, whereas travertine was selected for its lightweight properties. For each distinct wall system, designed with various material types and thicknesses, a unique energy performance certificate was prepared. This comparative approach clearly demonstrated the direct impact of material changes on energy performance indicators. The reason for basing the analyses on variations in the materials forming the exterior wall layers is that exterior walls are in direct contact with atmospheric conditions and play a critical role in maintaining indoor thermal comfort. The thermal transmittance coefficient (U-value) of exterior walls significantly affects indoor comfort conditions and energy demand. Therefore, optimizing the composition of exterior wall layers is of great importance in minimizing heat losses during winter and heat gains during summer. As a result of the evaluations, it was determined that the building constructed with aerated concrete masonry exhibited lower annual total operational energy consumption compared to buildings constructed with brick and concrete block masonry. The importance of thermal insulation-previously not widely implementedin terms of building energy performance was demonstrated through calculations, and it was observed that using insulation materials at appropriate thicknesses enhances the building's energy efficiency. Increasing insulation thickness within optimal limits led to significant reductions in annual heating energy demand. Furthermore, the calculations indicated that exterior façade paint applications, often preferred due to their rapid implementation, resulted in higher energy consumption compared to examples utilizing exterior cladding materials. Cladding systems providing additional thermal resistance demonstrated better performance in reducing operational energy losses. These findings reveal that rapid and low-cost solutions may not always provide long-term energy efficiency advantages. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that conscious material selection in exterior wall systems plays a critical role in enhancing building operational energy performance and achieving sustainable construction goals. The findings serve as a guiding reference for future case projects. In particular, standard material choices in mass housing applications should be re-evaluated in terms of energy performance, as these choices directly influence the building's operational energy consumption. Furthermore, the study reveals that energy performance analyses can be conducted through the BEP-BUY2 application from the project design phase through to implementation, thereby enabling effective control over the building's operational energy. Increasing technical knowledge regarding the energy performance of building materials and adopting a performance-oriented design approach in the design process will directly contribute to reducing energy consumption in the construction sector. In this context, the study provides significant contributions not only to academic literature but also to practical applications. By offering concrete and calculation-based data, it raises awareness of energy-efficient building design and promotes the wider adoption of sustainable construction practices.
