Today, industrial production and materials science are undergoing one of the most critical transformations in their history. Production models derived from fossil fuels and“use-and-throw”habits, which have persisted for over a century, have created damage to our planet's ecological balance that is difficult to repair. Climate change, plastic pollution in the oceans, and the dangerous increase of carbon emissions in the atmosphere are forcing engineering disciplines into a radical paradigm shift. In this context, the search for high-performance materials is no longer shaped solely by mechanical strength or cost, but also by the axes of“sustainability”and“biodegradability.”Composite materials have gained an indispensable place in a wide range of sectors, from automotive to aerospace, and construction to consumer products, thanks to the advantages they offer such as high strength, corrosion resistance, and lightweight properties. However, while the production volumes of these materials increase exponentially every year, the environmental burden created by synthetic fibers such as carbon, glass, and aramid used in traditional composites grows at the same rate. These synthetic reinforcement elements, which require energy-intensive production processes and remain in nature without degrading for centuries when their service life expires, contradict a sustainable future vision. While global regulations such as international climate agreements and European Union directives make reducing the carbon footprint a legal obligation rather than a choice, scientists and manufacturers are turning to alternative materials obtained from renewable sources that can return to nature. In light of these ecological and industrial imperatives, natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites (bio-composites) are rising as a strong alternative to their synthetic counterparts. The production of natural fibers requires less energy compared to synthetic fibers, which makes them extremely attractive in terms of energy efficiency. Their low density, low cost, and most importantly, being a renewable resource increase the industrial potential of these materials. The focus of this study, jute fiber, is a lignocellulosic and completely biodegradable fiber obtained from the stems of plants of the Corchorus genus. Since jute naturally traps carbon through photosynthesis, it directly contributes to the final product achieving carbon-neutral goals when used in composite materials. However, the environmental advantages possessed by natural fibers like jute face some fundamental technical barriers in engineering applications. At the forefront of these barriers is the chemical incompatibility between the hydrophilic, i.e., water-loving, character of the fibers and the hydrophobic, i.e., water-repelling, structure of polymer matrices widely used in the industry, such as polypropylene. The mechanical performance of composite materials depends largely on the strength of the interfacial bond between the reinforcement element and the matrix material. Due to its cellulosic structure, jute fiber hosts abundant hydroxyl groups on its surface, giving it a polar character. On the other hand, polypropylene is a thermoplastic with an apolar structure. When these two different chemical characters come together, a weak interface forms, much like the example of oil and water repelling each other. This weak interaction prevents the load applied to the composite material from being efficiently transferred from the matrix to the fibers, causing the targeted strength values not to be achieved. More importantly, the water-loving nature of jute fibers leads to water absorption by the material in humid environments. Water molecules penetrate between the fiber and the matrix, weakening the bonds, causing the fibers to swell, and deteriorating the dimensional stability and mechanical properties of the material over time. Although sodium hydroxide (alkali) treatments applied in the literature to solve this problem clean the fiber surface and increase roughness, thereby improving mechanical interlocking to some extent, they are not sufficient on their own to increase moisture resistance as they do not form a chemical bond. At this point, the conceptual framework presented by this thesis study proposes an innovative solution inspired by nature and using natural resources to solve the aforementioned interface problem. The study aims to use a bio-based compatibilizing agent based on natural pine resin (rosin) obtained from pine trees, instead of petroleum-derived synthetic coupling agents. Pine resin is a substance that contains a high rate of resin acids in its structure and naturally exhibits a hydrophobic character. In this study, it is envisaged that the maleopimaric acid (MPA) adduct, synthesized as a result of the Diels-Alder reaction of levopimaric acid, one of the main components of pine resin, with maleic anhydride, will serve as a molecular bridge between jute and polypropylene. This newly synthesized MPA molecule carries a much superior binding potential than levopimaric acid with its bifunctional structure containing both acid and anhydride functional groups and its stable thermal properties. The proposed chemical mechanism is based on a dual binding strategy. In the first leg of the mechanism, the reactive acid and anhydride groups on the MPA molecule react with the hydroxyl groups on the surface of the jute fiber activated by alkali treatment. The esterification and acylation reactions that will occur as a result of these reactions will ensure that MPA molecules are grafted onto the fiber surface with strong covalent bonds. This is not just a physical adhesion, but a permanent and durable chemical union. In the second leg of the mechanism, the other end of the MPA molecules firmly attached to the fiber surface comes into play. The bulky and hydrophobic hydrocarbon body of MPA, inherited from pine resin, shows great chemical similarity to the polypropylene matrix. It is expected that these hydrophobic tail parts will enter into a strong physical interaction with the molten polypropylene chains during composite production through van der Waals forces and molecular entanglement. The advantages this molecular design will bring to the composite material are not limited to mechanical improvement alone. The coating of the jute fiber surface by the MPA adduct like armor will mask the hydrophilic character of the fiber and create a hydrophobic shield around it. In this way, it is aimed to prevent the“moisture sensitivity”problem, which is the biggest soft spot of natural fiber composites. It is predicted that the created hydrophobic barrier will prevent water molecules from penetrating the fiber structure, thereby reducing the water absorption capacity of the composite and maintaining its performance even under harsh environmental conditions. To scientifically validate this conceptual framework, a comprehensive experimental methodology was executed. In the initial phase of the experimental procedures, the surface modification parameters of the jute fibers were optimized to expose the reactive hydroxyl groups without compromising the structural integrity of the fibers. Preliminary single-fiber tensile tests revealed that aggressive alkali treatments, specifically utilizing a 10% sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentration at a temperature of 65°C for 30 minutes, severely degraded the cellulosic backbone of the jute fiber. This degradation resulted in a drastic reduction in the tensile strength of the individual fibers, plummeting from 550.89 MPa to 433.17 MPa. Based on this critical finding, the alkali treatment parameters were revised for the main composite production phase. A milder modification process using a 5% NaOH solution at room temperature with a liquor ratio of 1:15 was adopted. This optimized approach successfully removed non-cellulosic impurities such as waxes, oils, and pectins, increased surface roughness for mechanical interlocking, and preserved the internal load-bearing capacity of the cellulose microfibrils. Following the surface optimization, composite materials were manufactured utilizing a hot-pressing technique. The composites were formulated with a constant jute fiber loading of 30% by weight, combined with varying concentrations of the maleopimaric acid compatibilizer (0%, 0.5%, 1%, and 2% by weight). The dry blending was carried out using a mechanical mixer to prevent agglomeration caused by static electricity, ensuring a homogeneous distribution of the 1-millimeter chopped jute fibers, polypropylene granules, and powdered MPA. The mixture was then hot-pressed into 4-millimeter-thick plates at a temperature of 195°C for 15 minutes. This temperature was strategically selected to exceed the softening point of the commercial MPA (105-115°C) and the melting point of the polypropylene matrix, while remaining safely below the thermal degradation threshold of the jute fibers. Following consolidation, the composite plates were cooled under pressure to minimize internal stresses, and standard test specimens were subsequently extracted using a precise Computer Numerical Control (CNC) milling machine in accordance with ISO standards. The microstructural consolidation and interfacial quality of the fabricated composites were first evaluated through hydrostatic density measurements following the ISO 1183-1 standard. The analysis revealed that the uncompatibilized control group possessed a remarkably low density of 0.864 g/cm³, indicating a high volume fraction of micro-voids caused by the lack of chemical affinity and poor wetting between the hydrophilic jute and the hydrophobic polypropylene. However, the introduction of merely 0.5% by weight of MPA resulted in a significant increase in density, reaching a peak value of 0.942 g/cm³. This structural densification proves that the in-situ esterification reactions during hot pressing successfully bridged the interfacial gaps, eliminating voids and creating a highly consolidated internal structure. At higher MPA concentrations (1% and 2%), the density values slightly receded to 0.913 g/cm³ and 0.927 g/cm³, respectively, pointing to the onset of agglomeration where excess compatibilizer particles created localized structural defects rather than interacting with the fiber surface. The mechanical characterization of the composites under static axial loads further corroborated the success of the dual-binding mechanism. Tensile tests, conducted in accordance with the ISO 527-2 standard, demonstrated that the addition of 0.5% MPA yielded the highest stiffness, elevating the Young's Modulus from 1365 MPa in the control group to 1415 MPa. Furthermore, the ultimate tensile strength exhibited a continuous upward trend corresponding to the increase in compatibilizer content. The strength rose from 24.23 MPa in the uncompatibilized state to a maximum of 26.18 MPa at 2% MPA loading, reflecting an 8% overall improvement. Despite this peak in ultimate strength at higher loadings, the most balanced ductile behavior was observed at the 0.5% MPA concentration, which provided an elongation at break of 2.88%. Higher concentrations of MPA restricted molecular mobility and induced a more brittle fracture mechanism, lowering the elongation values to 2.58%. The most dramatic enhancement in the mechanical performance was observed during the dynamic impact tests. Unnotched Charpy impact tests, performed following the ISO 179-1 standard, measured the material's ability to absorb and dissipate sudden energy before fracture. The control group exhibited an average impact strength of 8.70 kJ/m². The incorporation of 0.5% MPA resulted in a monumental 58% increase in toughness, propelling the impact strength to an impressive 13.72 kJ/m². This peak in energy absorption signifies that the optimized interfacial adhesion requires significantly more energy to initiate and propagate cracks or to cause fiber pull-out. Conversely, as the MPA concentration was increased to 1% and 2%, the impact strength drastically plummeted to 12.02 kJ/m² and 7.49 kJ/m², respectively. The drop below the control group's performance at 2% MPA confirms that the agglomeration of unreacted compatibilizer molecules acts as severe stress concentrators, initiating premature brittle failure under dynamic shock loads. To assess the environmental durability and the effectiveness of the hypothesized hydrophobic shield, long-term water absorption tests were conducted over a period of 192 hours following the ISO 62 standard. The uncompatibilized control specimens absorbed 12.52% of their weight in water by the end of the saturation period. The addition of 0.5% MPA successfully reduced this final moisture uptake to 10.02%, validating the premise that the hydrophobic hydrocarbon structure of the maleopimaric acid successfully masked the hydrophilic hydroxyl groups on the jute fibers, significantly restricting water diffusion. However, at the 2% MPA loading, the water absorption rate unexpectedly escalated to 12.85%, surpassing even the control group. This phenomenon is attributed to the excessive unreacted compatibilizer creating micro-capillary pathways and structural flaws within the matrix, thereby facilitating moisture penetration. In conclusion, this thesis presents a highly effective, nature-inspired engineering solution to the inherent challenges of natural fiber composites. The empirical data conclusively proves that the optimum concentration of maleopimaric acid for the physical and mechanical enhancement of jute-reinforced polypropylene composites is 0.5% by weight. At this precise threshold, the material achieves its highest density, superior impact toughness, balanced tensile properties, and maximum resistance to moisture absorption. To further advance this promising technology, future studies are highly recommended to explore narrower MPA concentration bands (between 0.1% and 0.5%) for finer optimization. Additionally, investigating the effects of high-shear manufacturing processes, such as extrusion compounding followed by injection molding, on the MPA reaction kinetics would provide valuable industrial insights. Finally, subjecting the developed bio-composites to dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and accelerated environmental aging tests (including ultraviolet exposure and freeze-thaw cycles) will be crucial steps in fully validating this sustainable material for long-term, high-performance outdoor applications.
