Özet
Bu doktora tezi, Angela Carter'ın The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman (1972), Nights at the Circus (1984) ve The Passion of New Eve (1977) adlı romanlarında posthuman öznenin doğuşunu ve posthumanizmin temel kavramlarını incelemektedir. Önemli posthumanist eleştirmenlerin görüşlerinden ve kesişen teorik söylemlerden yola çıkan bu tez, Carter'ın eserlerinin 'insan'a dair önceki tanımları yıktığını ve insanın sınırlarını sürekli olarak sorgulayarak yeni varoluşsal düzlemler oluşturduğunu ileri sürmektedir. İnsanın beden, teknoloji, toplumsal cinsiyet, doğa ve kültürle kurduğu ilişkileri yeniden yapılandıran Carter'ın romanları, insanın merkezî konumunu sorgulamakta ve böylelikle 'posthuman' kavramının ortaya çıkmasına zemin hazırlamaktadır. Bu yörüngede tez, Carter'ın seçilen romanlarını posthümanizmin ayrı bir kuramsal söylem olarak ortaya çıkışından önce posthümanist düşünceyi önceleyen metinler olarak okumaktadır. Bu bağlamda Carter'ın kurmacası, insanı teknolojiler, mekânlar ve diğer yaşam biçimleriyle kurduğu ilişkiler aracılığıyla üretilen, icra edilen, dönüştürülen ve sürekli olarak yeniden kurulan bir varlık biçimi olarak kurgular. Bu nedenle tezde incelenen her roman, posthumanizmin farklı bir boyutunun analizi olarak ele alınmaktadır. The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman, mekân ile posthuman varlık arasındaki etkileşim üzerinden, özellikle heterotopyalar ve illüzyon ile gerçeklik arasındaki gerilim bağlamında ele alınmaktadır. Bu noktada yapılan analiz, mekânsal etkileşimin posthuman özneyi nasıl şekillendirdiğini ve yeniden yapılandırdığını vurgulamaktadır. Nights at the Circus, bedensellik, melezlik ve performativite açısından ele alınmakta; Sophie Fevvers, kanatlarıyla birlikte insan, hayvan ve canavar arasındaki normatif sınırları ihlal eden bir posthüman figür olarak değerlendirilmektedir. The Passion of New Eve ise teknoloji, beden, posthuman feminizm, toplumsal cinsiyet inşası bağlamında mercek altına alınmakta; Eve/lyn'i ise, bedeni teknolojik ve ideolojik bağlamda sürekli yeniden şekillenen posthuman bir özne olarak incelemektedir. Bu üç romanı bir arada ele alan bu doktora tezi, posthumanizmin temel kavramlarına dair kapsamlı bir inceleme sunmakta ve Angela Carter'ın kurmacasına yeni bir eleştirel bakış açısı kazandırmaktadır.

This dissertation examines the emergence of the posthuman subject and the major configurations of posthumanism in Angela Carter's The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman (1972), Nights at the Circus (1984), and The Passion of New Eve (1977). Drawing on prominent posthumanist theorists and intersecting critical discourses, this dissertation argues that Carter's fiction unsettles the notion of the human as a stable and autonomous subject. By reconfiguring the relations between human and body, technology, gender, nature and culture, her novels question the centrality of human and create a critical space for the emergence of the posthuman. Accordingly, this dissertation reads Carter's selected novels as texts that anticipate posthumanist thought before posthumanism emerged as a distinct theoretical discourse. Carter's fiction reimagines the human as something produced, performed, transformed and constantly reconstituted through its relations with technologies, spaces and other forms of life. Each novel analyzed in this dissertation is therefore read as an articulation of a distinct dimension of posthumanism. The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman is examined through the relation between space and posthuman becoming, with particular attention to heterotopias and the tension between illusion and reality. On this basis, the novel reflects how spatial engagement shapes and reconfigures the posthuman subject. Nights at the Circus is analyzed in relation to corporeality, hybridity and performativity, focusing particularly on Sophie Fevvers as a posthuman figure whose winged body disrupts the normative boundaries between the human, the animal and the monstrous. The Passion of New Eve is investigated through technology, embodiment, posthuman feminism, gender reconfiguration and performativity, centering on Eve/lyn as a posthuman subject whose body becomes a site of technological and ideological reconstruction. By bringing these three novels together, this dissertation offers an expansive study of Carter's engagement with the central concepts of posthumanism and offers a new critical perspective on her fiction.
