Hücreler üzerinde kapasite ölçümü, SOH (State of Health), SOC (State of Charge) ve açık devre gerilimi (OCV) testleri gerçekleştirilmiştir.
In this study, the secondary-use potential of used LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) lithium-ion batteries in solar energy storage systems was experimentally investigated within the framework of sustainable energy transition and circular economy principles. The rapid increase in global energy demand, environmental concerns, and the depletion of fossil fuel resources have accelerated the transition toward renewable energy technologies. Among renewable energy sources, solar energy has gained significant importance due to its abundance, accessibility, and environmentally friendly characteristics. However, the intermittent and fluctuating nature of solar energy generation creates a critical need for reliable, efficient, and economically viable energy storage systems to ensure energy continuity, grid stability, and effective energy management. Energy storage systems play a fundamental role in overcoming the mismatch between energy production and consumption in photovoltaic (PV) systems. Traditionally, lead-acid batteries have been widely used in solar energy storage applications due to their low initial investment cost and well-established technology. Nevertheless, lead-acid batteries suffer from several disadvantages, including low energy density, limited depth of discharge, short cycle life, high maintenance requirements, and environmental concerns related to lead toxicity. These limitations reduce their long-term economic and environmental sustainability. Lithium-ion batteries, on the other hand, offer superior technical performance characteristics such as high energy density, high round-trip efficiency, long cycle life, low self-discharge rate, and reduced maintenance requirements. Among lithium-ion battery chemistries, Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries are particularly preferred due to their enhanced thermal stability, intrinsic safety, long cycle life, and relatively stable electrochemical performance. Despite these advantages, the high initial cost of new lithium-ion battery systems remains a major barrier to their widespread adoption in residential and small-scale solar energy storage applications. In this context, the concept of second-life or secondary-use batteries has emerged as a promising solution to reduce costs and improve resource efficiency. After completing their first-life applications—typically in electric vehicles (EVs) or other high-demand systems—lithium-ion batteries often retain a significant portion of their original capacity. Although they may no longer meet the stringent performance requirements of mobility applications, they can still be suitable for less demanding stationary energy storage systems. Reusing these batteries in solar energy storage applications can extend their service life, reduce electronic waste, lower carbon footprint, and contribute to the circular economy. Within the scope of this thesis, commercially obtained used LFP lithium-ion cells were subjected to comprehensive experimental analysis in a controlled laboratory environment to evaluate their technical suitability for secondary use in solar energy storage systems. The experimental methodology included detailed electrochemical performance tests such as capacity measurements, State of Health (SOH) determination, State of Charge (SOC) analysis, and open-circuit voltage (OCV) measurements. These tests were conducted using standardized charge-discharge protocols to ensure consistency and accuracy in data acquisition. A total of 50 used LFP cells were tested. During the experimental process, 46 cells provided valid and stable measurements, while 4 cells were classified as failed due to abnormal voltage behavior, excessive internal resistance, or unstable performance characteristics. The exclusion of these failed cells ensured the reliability and integrity of the dataset used for further evaluation. Capacity tests were conducted to determine the remaining usable capacity of each cell compared to its nominal capacity. The State of Health (SOH) values were calculated based on the ratio of measured capacity to nominal capacity, providing a quantitative indicator of battery degradation. The experimental results revealed that the average SOH of the tested cells was 95.99%, indicating that the majority of the used cells retained a high percentage of their original capacity. This finding suggests that many lithium-ion batteries retired from primary applications still possess substantial electrochemical performance suitable for secondary applications. In addition to SOH evaluation, State of Charge (SOC) and open-circuit voltage (OCV) measurements were analyzed to assess voltage consistency, charge retention behavior, and cell balancing requirements. OCV-SOC correlation analysis provided insights into the electrochemical stability and uniformity of the cells. These parameters are particularly critical for battery pack assembly, as voltage imbalance among cells can negatively affect overall system performance, safety, and lifespan. To ensure optimal pack performance and safety, the tested cells were classified into three distinct groups according to their SOH values. This classification aimed to minimize performance mismatch within battery modules and enhance pack-level reliability. Grouping cells with similar SOH characteristics is essential for preventing uneven aging, overcharging, or deep discharging within assembled battery systems. The grouped cells were evaluated for potential battery pack configuration scenarios suitable for solar energy storage applications. The experimental findings demonstrate that the majority of tested used LFP lithium-ion cells are technically suitable for secondary use in stationary solar energy storage systems. When appropriate classification, balancing strategies, and a properly designed Battery Management System (BMS) are implemented, second-life batteries can provide reliable and stable performance. The integration of safe BMS solutions is crucial to monitor voltage, temperature, current, and SOC parameters in real time, thereby ensuring operational safety and extending system lifetime. From an economic perspective, the reuse of second-life lithium-ion batteries can significantly reduce the initial investment cost of solar energy storage systems. This cost advantage may increase accessibility to renewable energy technologies, particularly for residential users and small-scale commercial applications. Moreover, from an environmental standpoint, extending battery life reduces raw material demand, minimizes waste generation, and decreases the environmental burden associated with battery production and recycling processes. In conclusion, this study experimentally confirms that used LFP lithium-ion batteries with high SOH values can be effectively repurposed for solar energy storage applications. The results highlight the importance of systematic testing, proper classification, and robust battery management in ensuring safe and efficient secondary use. The findings contribute to the development of sustainable energy storage strategies by promoting resource efficiency, cost reduction, and environmental sustainability. Furthermore, this research supports the integration of circular economy principles into renewable energy systems by demonstrating the technical feasibility of second-life battery applications in photovoltaic energy storage infrastructures. Future studies may focus on long-term cycling performance, thermal behavior under varying environmental conditions, large-scale pack integration strategies, and techno-economic analyses to further validate the practical implementation of second-life LFP battery systems in real-world solar energy applications.
