In F. W. J. Schelling's late philosophy, the distinction between negative and positive philosophy takes shape through the tension between reason and existence, whatness and thatness, possibility and actuality. Negative philosophy is a necessary and a priori science that proceeds through reason's own immanent movement. It grasps, within pure thought, the quiddity of things, their conceptual order, and the domain of potencies. Yet it cannot derive actual existence from its own immanent movement. For existence is not a consequence that can be inferred from the necessary structure of the concept, but a fact that precedes thought itself. Positive philosophy proceeds from precisely this fact, that is, from unprethinkable being, and is directed toward the knowledge of actual existence. In this respect, the beginning of positive philosophy is not experience itself. For positive philosophy, experience is rather the ground on which the whatness of the principle, whose existence alone is initially known, is verified a posteriori by following its actual unfoldings. For this reason, insofar as metaphysical empiricism, the method of positive philosophy, grounds the knowledge of actual existence in experience, it can be reduced neither to mere conceptual derivation nor to an empiricism that begins from experience. The distinction between negative and positive philosophy thus shows that philosophy must investigate and justify not only what is thinkable, but also whether the thinkable actually exists.
