SUMMARY EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF CENTRIFUGAL PUMP WITH STRAIGHT AND CONICAL PUMP IMPELLERS WITH 45° OF INLET/EXIT BLADE ANGLES. Keywords : Straight blade, conical blade, open impeller, closed impeller, tip clearance losses, centrifugal pump. Circulation pumps are widely used pumps in the practice. Therefore many different types and models of impellers are used in the circulation pumps. Various models of impellers are manufactured according to the purpose of required“head produced”and“capacity”. Especially, different types of impellers that have various numbers of blades are used in the cooling system of vehicle motors. The selection of the type of pump impeller and the determination of the number of blades of the impeller have a great importance in the cooling system of vehicle motors. Pump shaft power and tip clearance losses also have great importance as well as the importance of the preferred head and capacity of the pump. In the centrifugal pumps, both of the closed and open types of impellers are used for many years. Open types of impellers are usually preferred, because closed types of impellers are more sensitive for the choking with respect to open types of impellers. The sensitive for the choking is one of the main reasons of the preference of the open types of impellers for the pumping of water as well as mixtures. In this study, the impellers of cooling water pumps that are used in the vehicle motors are manufactured nearly at the real dimensions and then they are tested. The studies are performed both of the closed impellers and also straight blades and conical blades types of open impellers. All of the impeller types are manufactured separately to obtain both of the backward and forward types of blades. Measurements are made at the 2000 and 2820 number of the revolution for the forward blades and at the 3500 and 4000 number of the revolution for the backward blades. At first, tip clearance effects on the impellers tested are investigated and what the dimension of the effect of the clearance space is also examined and the results are compared with the data that are given in the literature. XVIPumps performances axe investigated according to number of vanes and vane height that are very important factors for the selections of radial pumps. At this section experimental studies are performed on the impellers that have 5, 7 and 11 blades and the effect of the number of blades is investigated. At the same time straight blade impellers (b2/bl=l) and conical blade impellers the effect of the blade height on the pump performance are examined and compared with the studies on the straight blades impellers. The number of revolution of various types of impellers, vane heights and clearances on the efficiency and shaft power and other similar performance values are investigated and obtained results are given in the graphical forms with the comparisons. It has been shown that number of vanes positively effect the head produced for the forward conical impellers, for this reason, impellers that have more number of vanes must be preferred if high head produced is required. It has been determined that baclcward blade impellers aren't sensitive for the tip clearances, on other hand, forward blade impellers have higher sensitivity for the tip clearances consequently, backward blade impellers are more suitable for using in the wide clearance dimension. Obtained experimental results are compared with the results in the literature. xvii
