ABSTRACT The aims of this study are to research on some variables which affect the locus of control of 12-year-old children. These variables have respectively dealt with as gender, rank of birth in the family, mother's professional background, socioeconomic level of the family and educational level of the parents and the level of locus of control the parents. The research also evaluates whether there is a difference between perceived mother' s behaviours for children and the level of locus of control of mothers. The research was carried out during the 1999-2000 Academic Year. The 6th class students attending puclic and private primary schools that are under the control of Ministry of Education and situated in the European part of Istanbul constitute the universe of the research which is carried out according to Relational Scanning Model. The sampe of the research is composed of 318 students-161 girls and 157 boys- attending the 6th class of seven different primary schools four of which are private. These primary schools are under the supervision of Ministry of Education and are situated in the European part of Istanbul. During the data collection stage of the research, Nowicki-Stnckland Locus of Control Scale was used to determine the direction of students' Locus of Control, Perceived Parental Questionnaire was used to determine the mother's perceived behaviour, and Rotter's Internal-External Locus of Control Scale was used to determine the level of locus of control of the parents direction. Besides, Personal Data Collection Chart was used to collect some personal information about the students and their parents. To analyse the collected data; t-test, One- Way Variance Analysis in Excell Windows statistics packet were used. The result of the study can be listed as follows: 1. No significant difference has been found between the direction of locus control of students who are of different gender.2. A significant difference has been found between the students' direction of locus of control according to the rank of birth in the family. It has been found that the student who is an only child in the family has more internal locus of control than students who are the first, second or the last child in the family. 3. No significant difference as to locus of control has been found among children whose mothers are of different proffessional background. 4. No significant difference has been found between the locus control of students who are from families of different socioeconomic levels. 5. No significant difference has been found between the students' direction of locus of control according to their fathers' educational level. 6. No significant difference has been found between the students' direction of locus of control according to their mothers' educational level. 7. No significant difference has been found between the student's and his/her father's locus of control level. 8. No significant difference has been found between the student's and his/her mother's locus of control level. 9. No significant difference has been found between the mothers perceived behaviours and the mother's locus of cpntrol level. 10. No significant difference has been found between the mother's perceived behaviour of care and affection and her locus of control level. Ill11. No significant difference has been found between the mother's perceived behaviour of help with achieving goals and her locus of control level. 12. No significant difference has been found between the mother's perceived behaviour of consistent discipline and her locus of control level. 13. No significant difference has been found between the mother's perceived bahaviour of protection and her locus of control level. 14. No significant difference has been found between the mother's perceived behaviour of physical punishment and her locus control level. 15. No significant difference has been found between the mother's perceived behaviour of pressure for success and her locus of control level. 16. A significant difference has been found between the mother's perceived behaviour of affective punishment and her locus of control level. This significant difference has been found between the students whose mothers have low locus of control level (internal control) and the students whose mothers have middle locus of control level (neutral group). iv
