53 SUMMARY The effectiveness of connective tissue autografts placed on denuded root surfaces and under the split \ thickness flaps were evaluated. Keratinization of the connective tissue grafts were also assessed. 17 patients with 21 areas of gingival recession and inadequate attached gingiva were treated with free connective tissue autografts. The grafts were used to eradicate pockets, to increase the width of attached gingiva and to cover the exposed root surfaces. Width of keratinized gingiva, pocket depth, width of attached gingiva, depth of recession and width of recession were measured before operation, 1 month and 3 months after operation. Por the cylogical evaluation scraping materials were obtained from the recipient site, before operation 1 month and 3 months after operation. The results of our study showed that, connective tissue autografts increased.the width of keratinized attached gingiva, covered the denuded roots with a mean of 50%, eliminated pockets extending beyond the mucogingival junction. It is observed that, the wounds on the recipient and donor sites were healed without giving any discomfort to the patients.54 Nonkeratinized surface of the connective tissue grafts were displayed significant amount of keratinization in 3 months. Gingival zone clinically and histologically resembling with the keratinized attached gingiva was gained with the connective tissue autograft procedure. This procedure can be used when the other mucogingival surgical procedures are not indicated for the treatment of gingival recession cases. But the difficulty and precision of this operation should also be kept in mind
