ABSTRACT SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF POLYANILINE / POLYPYRROLE CONDUCTIVE FILMS Otabatmaz, Giiliz M.Sc, Department of Chemistry Supervisor: Prof Dr. Zuhal Küçükyavuz Co-supervisor: Prof Dr. Savaş Küçükyavuz July 2002, 122 pages In the first part of this study, Polydimethylsilojrane/Polyaniline/Polypyrrole (PDMS/PAn/PPy), PDMS/PPy/PAn, PAn/PPy and PPy/PAn films were synthesised electrochemically at a constant potential in aqueous İM H2SO4. For comparison PAn, PPy, PAn/PDMS and PPy/PDMS composites were also synthesized electrochemically under the same conditions. mThe relative amounts of PDMS, PAn, PPy were varied in each combination. The change of conductivity with composition was investigated. Films were characterised with FT-IR, DSC, TGA, CV, SEM and conductivity measurements. The results of characterization studies indicate crosslinking copolymer formation for the PAn/PPy, PPy/PAn, PDMS/PAn/PPy and PDMS/PPy/PAn systems. SEM microphotographs indicate a well defined interface in the PDMS/PAn/PPy films. Changing the order of subsequential synthesis of two monomers whose individual homopolymers are conductive in origin give a conducting product with different properties. In the second part of this study, PDMS/PPy and PDMS/CF(Carbon Fiber)/PPy composites were electrochemically synthesized in aqueous p-toluene sulphonic acid (PTSA). The relative amounts of components were varied. Highly flexible and foldable PDMS/PPy composites were obtained. Using DSC, TGA, SEM, FT-IR, conductivity measurements and mechanical tests, characterization of the second set composites were performed. Better mechanical properties were achieved by the insertion of CF to the system. All films including PDMS were washed with the solvent of PDMS and no appreciable weight loss was recorded. This suggests existence of strong interaction between PDMS and the matrix. IV
