SUMMARY As is very well known, the Armenian question is., one of the most important issues of Turkish history and diplomacy. Accordingly there are a great number of academic studies and researches on the Armenian question prepared by Turkish scholars, mainly historians. Yet, almost all of the studies deal with the events and clashes of the late Ottoman period, the Armenian claims about the so- called“Armenian genocide, and Armenian terrorism against Turkish diplomats which emerged in the 1970s. Among the vast number of studies, however, there are not enough researches about the Armenian Church and Armenian identity in general, and hardly any about the interaction between the Armenian Church, religion, identity, state and politics. The aim of this paper is to fill this vacuum. The logic of this study is the fact that it is impossible to understand and handle the Armenian question without clearly formulating such concepts as ”Armenia“, ”Armenian“, ”Armenian history“, ”Armenian Church“, and ”Armenian national identity". This master thesis is an attempt to reveal the relationship between church and nation-building, state-building and politics in Armenia and the impact of religion on the formation of the Armenian national identity. 167
