SUMMARY The work-site labour union representative is an institution aiming to represent the employees at the work-site, to defend and prevent the violation of their rights which are gained according to the laws and/or collective agreements. They play a very important role in work life and they act as a bridge between the employees and the employers. They listen to the demands of the employees, try to solve their claims, to maintain the cooporation between the employees and the employers and to obtain the peace in the work life. They protect the rights and the benefits of the employees, monitor the implementation of the working conditions which were set by the labour laws and collective agreements. This institution entered into the Turkish Law in 1963. Before this regulation, there was an other institution called as“employee representation”in our law. The main difference between these two institutions is in the sellection procedure. Employee representatives were elected by the employees. However the labour union representatives, as can be seen from their names, are elected and appointed by the labour unions. According to the current regulations, labour unions which have certain authority to make the collective agreement have the right to appoint the representatives. Representatives have to have some qualifications; such as being a Turkish Citizen, being a member of the labour union etc. Number of 110representatives that can be appointed is regulated by the statute and restricted according to the number of the employees at that work-site. Their activity area is also restricted with the work-site. Having such important roles in work life, representatives have to be protected by laws and collective agreements against the unlawful transactions of the employers. Otherwise, they will be unable to perform their duties. To achieve this goal, Turkish law-maker has put special provisions to protect the representatives espâcially from unfair dismissals. Thanks to these regulations, representatives feel themselves safe and don't think the unwanted results while performing their duties. in
