Özet
11 ÖZET Türkiye ' de dil öğretimi büyük ölçüde ders kitaplarına bağlı olarak sürdürülmekte ve pek çok okulda ders kitapları etkin bir dil öğretiminin tek öğesi olarak kabul edilmektedir. Dil öğretiminde yaşanan sorunların en önemlilerinden biri de okutulan ders kitaplarının seçimi ve değerlendirilmesidir. Bir çok özel ve devlet okulunda kitap seçimleri bilimsel ölçütlerle yapılmadığı için dil öğretimi bundan olumsuz etkilenmektedir. Sözkonusu durumun bilincinde olarak bu uzmanlık çalışmasında, Çankaya Üniversitesi Hazırlık Okulunda okutulan“Lifelines Pre-intermediate öğrenci kitab”ının değerlendirilmesi yapılmış ayrıca toplanan veri ve saptanan ilkeler doğrultusunda bir uygulamaya gidilerek kitabın öğrenci ihtiyaçlarına yönelik geliştirilmesi amacıyla da dönüşümlü etkinlikler hazırlanmıştır. Bu araştırmanın gerçekleştirilmesinde anlamlı öğrenme süreci vurgulanmaktadır.Bir diğer amaç ise ders kitaplarını uyarlama gereksiniminin önemini sergilemektir. Birinci bölüm, çalışmanın amacı, kapsamı, hipotezler ve problemle ilgilidir. Yabancı dil öğretimi alanında ders kitaplarının seçimi ve değerlendirilmesi, öğretmen ve öğretim elemanlarının işbirliği,öğretim süreci içinde ders kitaplarının düzenli olarak öğrenci ihtiyaçları doğrultusunda uyarlanması ve yapılan seçim ve değerlendirmenin sadece öğretmen ve öğretim elemanlarının sorumluluğunda olmaması, öğrenme ve öğretim süreci içinde yer alan öğrencilerin de aktif sorumluluk almalarının önemi ve ilgili savlar vurgulanmaktadır. İkinci bölümde materyal geliştirme, değerlendirme, üretim ve program ile öğrenci gereksinimlerini belirleme, program türlerini tanıtma, uygun program türünün seçilmesi, program amaç ve hedeflerinin belirlenmesi ve belirlenmeiii sürecinde öğrencilerin rolü, gereksinim ve amaçların statik,mekanik bir yapıda olmadığı;aksine dinamik ve esnek olması gerektiği ile ilgili konular ele alınmıştır. Ders kitabı seçimi ve değerlendirilmesi ile ilgili konulan da bu bölüm kapsamaktadır. Kitap seçimi ve değerlendirme türleri, karar verme süreci ve söz konusu süreçte öğrenci, öğretmen rolü ve kitap seçiminde kullanılacak ölçütlerle ilgili geliştirilmiş ilkeler sunulmuştur. Üçüncü bölüm ise Çankaya Üniversitesi İngilizce Hazırlık Bölümünde görev yapan okutman ve okuyan öğrencilere uygulanan anketler ve sonuçlarının değerlendirilmesi ile ilgilidir. Aynı zamanda çalışmanın yapıldığı Çankaya Üniversitesi İngilizce Hazırlık Okulu ile ilgili amaç ve okulun misyonu tanıtılmaktadır. Dördüncü bölüm, anket uygulanan öğrencilerin ihtiyaçlarına göre geliştirilmiş olan etkinlikleri kapsamaktadır. Geliştirilen etkinliklerde amaç, materyal geliştirme ile ilgili örnek çalışmaları tanıtarak sözkonusu süreç ile ilgili dinamik yapıyı tanıtmak aynı zamanda bir ders kitabının kurumun ve öğlencilerinin gereksinimlerine göre nasıl uyarlanabileceğine ilişkin yeni örnek çalışmalar sergilemektir. Geliştirilen etkinliklerdeki çıkış noktası, anlamlı öğrenme süreci kapsamında öğrencinin yaşantılarının etkin hale getirilmesi ve dil öğretiminin olması gereken dinamik yönünü vurgulamaktır. Beşinci bölümde çalışmanın kısa bir özeti yapılmakta ve araştırmacının vardığı sonuçlarla birlikte öngörülen yararlı öneriler sunulmaktadır. Ekler bölümünde ise ders kitabı seçimi ve değerlendirilmesine yönelik derlenmiş ve geliştirilmiş çalışmalar özellikle bu konuda kaynak bulamayan ya da pratik çözüm ve yaklaşımlar arayan yabancı dil öğretmenlerine yardım ve öncülük etmek amacıyla konmuştur.

IV ABSTRACT The English teaching practices in Turkey are based mostly on coursebooks. In most schools, coursebooks are viewed as the only source necessary for an effective language- teaching program. The course book selection is not done according to any scientific criteria in most state and private schools. A poor selection in the coursebooks, however, results in failure in the implementation of the course. There have been some positive moves concerning this issue. Not all institutions pay little regard to the coursebook selection process, fortunately there are some universities, private and state schools that promote the use of scientific procedures when evaluating and choosing the coursebooks. The aim of this study is to analyze and evaluate the Lifelines Pre-Intermediate student's book in terms of its form and content in the light of meaningful learning reality. The course book used in Çankaya University Preparatory School has been evaluated and alternative activities have been suggested, taking into consideration the results of the survey carried out. A secondary aim is to make teachers realize how important coursebook adaptation is. The first chapter discusses the problems, and gives a broad description of the scope and content that concerns the study. It offers several hypotheses that emphasize the role of coursebook selection and adaptation, taking into account the students' needs, the collaboration of teachers during the selection and evaluation, and giving responsibility to the students during selection and evaluation process.The second chapter introduces and discusses the topics of materials development, production and evaluation, needs analysis, and syllabus types. This chapter also shows the issues related to course book selection and evaluation. The various general coursebook evaluation and selection methods are explained, and suggested criteria are offered for selecting coursebooks. Also the decision process is analyzed, and importance and function of the role of teachers and students is categorized. The third chapter shows the questionnaires (both student and teacher surveys) and results. An explanation about the mission of Çankaya University Preparatory School, the location where the questionnaires were issued, is introduced. The forth chapter offers suggested activities directly related to the goals of the group surveyed for the study. The aim of the suggested activities is to present dynamic exercises that supplement the coursebook, thus adapting the course to better meet the needs of the students. Also, methods are offered that promote meaningful learning and dynamic teaching through the process of encouraging students to utilize and channel their experiences and existing knowledge into the lesson so as to be able to better connect with, and assimilate, the target language. The fifth chapter concludes the findings of the thesis, showing a range of suggestions for selecting and evaluating coursebooks for teaching English.. The appendices are comprised of several sample checklists compiled, edited, and designed by the researcher.
