ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to search for links between personality and conflict management style preferences of individuals. For personality assessment, a scale that is developed by Prof. Dr. Oya Somer and based on Five Factor Model for Turkish has been used for a sample group of 188 working adults.Raw scores for personality factors (extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism and openness to experience ) have been further analized using Pearson correlations and multiple regression analysis with conflict management test results of the sample group. For conflict management styles, Aflazur Rahim's five style taxonomy ( integrating, dominating, compromising, obliging and avoiding) was taken as a basis and a scale was developed after having a pilot with 40 working adults. Following further factor and reliability analysis, the revised version of the scale was used in conjuction with the personality scale to reveal relations between conflict style preferences and personality factors of individuals. Results indicate t hat t here a re inde ed s ome s ignificant r elations b etween p ersonality factors and conflict management styles. It has been found that integrating style, as the most valued conflict management style is related most with agreeableness and openness to experience and that agreeableness alone can explain 21.3 % of the variance of the preference for this style where calmness as a subdimension of agreeableness can also explain 22.6% of the preference for this style. Research findings give further details about the links of other conflict management styles with personality factors. For future studies it is recommended that examination of effects of other situational moderators along with personality differences can contribute to our understanding of interactions between situational and personality factors involved in conflict situations as a whole.
