Özet
263 ÖZET Bu doktora çalışması, yeni tarih felsefesi ve postmodern tarihsel roman kuramları ışığında, tarihyazımı ve kurmacaya özgü dil, anlatı ve temsil konularına öncelikli olarak dikkat çekerek, tarih ve edebiyat ilişkisini kuramsal ve uygulamalı olarak incelemeyi amaçlamıştır. Bu inceleme için seçilen romanların, söz konusu tarihsel ve kuramsal tartışmalara katkıda bulunurken aynı zamanda geçmiş ve şimdi, gerçek ve temsil, bellek ve tarihsel olgu, resmi ve kişisel tarihler konularına farklı bakış açıları getirdiği tezi desteklenmektedir. Tezin ilk üç bölümünde tarih, edebiyat ve roman ilişkisi yirminci yüzyılın ikinci yarısındaki kuramsal tartışmalar doğrultusunda incelendikten sonra bu tartışmalar, tezin son bölümünde bin dokuz yüz seksen ve doksan yılları arasında ingiliz Edebiyatı'nda yazılmış yedi tarihyazımcı üstkurmaca roman (Waterland, Chatterton, The Passion, Sexing the Cherry, The White Hotel, Flaubert's Parrot ve Moon Tiger) bağlamında analiz edilmiştir. Ortak tür, tema ve yapısal özellikler gösteren bu romanlar, kendilerini açığa vuran yazın teknikleri, kurmaca-tarih ilişkisi ve etkileşimini sorgulamaları ve tarihin yeniden inşasının önemini vurgulamaları açısından seçilmişlerdir. Bu çalışma, söz konusu romanlar aracılığıyla, gerçeklik ve temsil, tarihyazımı ve kurmaca arasındaki benzerlikleri yeni tarih felsefesi ve postmodern tarihsel roman kuramları ile tekrar gözden geçirerek tartışmaktadır. Ayrıca, tarihsel bilince ve tarihyazımina getirdikleri eleştirel değerlendirme açısından bu romanların teksesli ve tekmetinli tarih olgusuna karşı bir duruş sergilediği gösterilmiştir. Tarihyazımı sürecinde tarihçinin, yazar gibi, dil aracılığıyla temsil edilen tarihi olayı zamanın yorumuyla birlikte seçim, düzenleme, olayörgüsü, dil sanatları, kendi yorumu ya da hayal gücüyle süsleme gibi aşamalardan geçirerek yazdığı savunulmaktadır. Bir üstanlatı olarak tarih fikrini sorgulayan ve tarihsel geçmişin yeniden inşasının önemine dikkat çeken bu romanlar, her tarihi olayın, tarihsel olgulara sadık kalmak kaydıyla güncelleştirilerek farklı zamanlarda farklı bakış açılarıyla yeniden yazılabileceğine işaret etmektedirler.

264 ABSTRACT This study attempts to investigate the connection between history and literature by tracing certain problematic areas of both historiography and fiction on the grounds of language, narrative and representation while claiming that the novels which are discussed contribute to the historical and theoretical discussions raised for the two disciplines. It examines the relationship between past and present, fact and representation, memory and historical artifacts, official history and personal histories. The problematic areas which are discussed in this study revolve around the notions of historical truth, multiplicity of facts, diverse ideological readings of historical documents, and deconstruction of the written historical discourse. The first three chapters of this dissertation are devoted to the study of the intricate relationships among history, literature and fiction and to the theoretical and practical arguments concerning them in the second half of the twentieth century. The fourth chapter scrutinizes seven historiographic metafictional novels- written in the decade of the eighties in British Literature (Waterland, Chatterton, The Passion, Sexing the Cherry, The White Hotel, Flaubert's Parrot and Moon Tiger)- -which self-refLexively concern themselves with reworking and rethinking of both fiction and history. This study tries to show that these novels, which share thematic and structural interest, challenge the absolute separation between reality and representation, historiography and fiction using both the theories of new philosophy of history and postmodern historical fiction. It also displays that, within their critical assessment of historiography, these novels paradoxically lay claim to historical events and personages combining historical consciousness and fictive imagination rejecting both univocality and unitextuality in historiography. Another issue depicted in this study is that, in the process of historiography, the disorderly state of history is organized in narrative form by historian/writer who deploys figurative process of troping and emplotment, constructs mental images, and creates analogy and contrast. Deconstructing the idea of history as grand narrative and emphasizing the importance of reconstructing historical past, the novels propose that every history is contemporary history and every event in history can be rewritten and reconstructed as a different narrative in another time.
