Özet

SUMMARY Effects of acid rain on the economically important three cult vated plants was investigated in this study. The aim of this research was to put forth morphological, anatomical and ecophysiological effects in the plants subjected to acid rain. The material used was broad-bean (yicia faba L. Eresen 8?), spinach (Spinacia oleracea Lo Matador) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L«). The plants were separated in to three groups; first group being 15 days old, second group 30 days old and third group as 60 days old plants. The acid rain applications were as a)Control, b)pH=5,4, c)pH=^,2 and d)pH=3,l. According to the results obtained by us. Ho vulgare leaves showed typical chlorosis, where as the leaves of Ş. oleracea and y. faba showed both chlorosis as well as nevrosis. The leaves of the second and third group i.e. older plants were more sensitive than the first group i.e. younger plants. An inhibition in the length was observed in all the three plants, resulting from acid rain. It also inhibited seed germination by delaying the same. The biomass valves also showed a loss and decrease in valves was lower between second and third group plants. The highest loss was observed in S. oleracea plants0 A great increase in the stomatal index was seen in the S. oleracea plants where as valves very near to the control group were obtained in the other two species» The amounts of chlorophyll also showed a decrease in all the three experimental plants. 74No anatomical deformation is seen in the roots, stems and leaves of H» vulgare, but disruptions are clearly visible in the palisade and spongy parenchyma of the leaves of V. faba and in the surroun dings of vascular bundles in S. oleracea. It seems that, the reasons for this effect are, the leaves of H. vulgar e are less effected by the acid rain because of the fact that they lie in a vertical position and possess a narrow leaf area. The leaves of V« faba and s. oleracea lie laterally and show a wide leaf area, which permits a greated contact in these species, as such, these plants are effected more. The absence of root and stem deformations in all the three species seems to be due to a higher content of CaCO^ in the soils used for these experiments, latter neutralises the acidic impact and thus prevents the roots and stems from the direct effects. 75
