Özet
SUMMARY The validity and reliability of rating scales are developed for populations for which they are used. Before using in other populations the scales must be adapted to those populations. This adaptation should include translation of scale appropriate for those populations language and culture and afterwards, the validity and reliability procedure for that population must be done. The aim of our study was to adapt the Shoulder Disability Questionnaire (SDQ) for use in Turkey and to test its reliability and validity. In this study a total of 80 patients that were admitted to our outpatient clinic of shoulder diseases with a complaint of shoulder pain were assessed. We determined their sociodemographic features. Detailed physical examination, subacromial injection test were done for all patients and also routine laboratory analyses and conventional shoulder x-rays were evaluated. The pain severity at rest, at motion and at sleep was considered by using numeric analogue scale. The shoulder's active and passive range of motion was assessed goniometrically by a physician. Constant- Murley scale was used as a functional assessment scale. The Turkish version of the SDQ formed by following standart adaptation procedure was filled by the patients. To show test's reliability (test-retest reliability) 32 patients that had pain and who did not have abnormality in physical examination were tested again with the Turkish version of the SDQ one week later. The Turkish version of the SDQ was completed within 4 minutes by the patients. Reliability of the adapted version was good, with high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha 0.76) and test-retest reliability (Pearson correlation coefficient 0.88). The Turkish version of the SDQ was found to have a weak relation with pain during motion and a moderate relation with pain during rest and sleep. There was no relation between the Turkish version of the SDQ and range of motion measures, except a weak relation with range of motion of active abduction and active extension. The Turkish version of the SDQ have a weak relation with range of motion subparameter of Constant-Murley scale and a moderate relation with other subparameters (pain, daily activities and strength). The Turkish version of the SDQ was mostly related with pain in subparameters in Constant-Murley scale. 45The SDQ is a pain related disability questionnaire. It is very practical and can be used easily by each patient him/herself. It does not require special instruments. It's data are fully subjective. The results of the present study indicate that the Turkish version of the SDQ is reliable and valid. The weak-moderate relation of questionnaire with clinic parameters including pain shows its validity. But the questionnaire should be experimented extensively for showing changes, for follow-up of patients and especially, for clinical use. For this reason the Turkish version of the SDQ's sensivity to clinical change should be tested in further studies. 46
