SUMMARY Sarıçam, Ibrahim "Umayyad-Hâhimî Struggle (From Pre-Islamic Period Untill the end of Muaviyah's Era) Ph. D. Thesis (Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Mustafa Fayda). During the pre-Islamic era and the rise of Islam Hâshimites and Umayyads were among the most influential families of Quraysh in Makka. The struggle between Hashim and Umayyah had started much before Islam and it continued between their descendants after Islam. With the emerge of Muhammad from Hashimites another stage of Umayyads-Hashimites struggle started. During Makka period while most of Umayyads were rejecting his message Hashimites supported him. Umayyads had gone on rejecting Muhammad after Hijrah and they pionered opposition by Quraysh against muslims. Umayyads who had fought with mushriks in Badr had many casuilties took the revenge of it in Uhud Battle killing Hamza. Umayyads finally converted into Islam during the conquest of Makka. This family, because its members were well experienced in military and government they undertook many military and governmental duties during the Prophet's and the first three chalips* era. Important posts were occupied especially in Othman's period. With the overtaking of chaliphate by Ali after Othman, who was from Hashimites, another stage started in struggle between the two tribes. The revolts against Ali by Umayyads who were dismissed from government entailed very bloody civil wars among muslims. Umayya state was established by Muaviyah who handed over the chaliphate from Hasan son of Ali. Inspite that Muaviyah's era had not given rise many fights between the tribes the conflict endured in this period as well. ^ffloekSgretim Kurulu tâerkcvf
