ABSTRACT SEKMEN, Mustafa: Place of our Traditional Dances within Turkish Theater and“Caucasian Chalk Circle”,“Bakkhas”,“I Appeared As Yunus”, Master of Science Thesis. (Advisor, Prof. Dr. Nurhan Karadağ) 379“ pages. First of all, by emphasizing the roots of theater and dance, fundamental relation between two arts have been studied. Then, variety, antiquity and cultural value of the Anatolian dances have been determined by studying the peculiarities thereof, and opportunities have been emphasized. Through the approach on how our dances have been studied with the republican regime, it was pointed out that the new regime perceives Anatolian dances as a cultural phenomenon. The study on ”Dance in Traditional Turkish Theater“ has shown that our dances are inevitable and functional elements for the traditional dance types. In the study of three dances in which Anatolian dances were used effectively; the resources of dances and the way interpretation determines and forms the dances, were put forward. The notation of the sample three dances has taken place in the register book form. The three sample dances are as follows: The first one is ”Caucasian Chalk Circle“ (Bertholt Brecht), staged by Bursa State Theater in the 1990-91 theatrical season, directed by Prof. Dr. Nurhan Karadağ. The second one is ”Bakkhas“ (Euripides), staged by Ankara State Theater in the 1990-91 theatrical reason, directed by Ergin Orbey. The third one is ”I appeared as Yunus" (Nihat Asyalı), staged by Ankara University, Faculty of Linguistic-History and Geography, Department of Theater in the 1990-91 theatrical season, ditected by Prof. Dr. Nurhan Karadağ. In general, this study emphasized the facilities of Anatolian dances and asserts that these dances are valuable and affluent resources for the efforts to create a National Theater and three examples are given in this respect.
