Özet
Tezin ana konusu, kentsel yayılım alanının farklı dönemlerde değismemesi, farklıdönemlerden yapıların su anki kentte üst üste gelmesi sonucunda ortaya çıkan çokkatmanlı kentlerdir. Tarihi kentlerin çok katmanlılık karakterini göz önünde tutarak,tarihi katmanlasmanın sunumu için prensip olusturmak tezin baslıcahedeflerindendir.Bu tez, koruma sürecinin bir parçası olarak, çok katmanlı kentlerin kendilerine özgükültürel önemlerini korumak, sürdürmek ve sunmayı amaçlayan sunumprensiplerinin tespiti üzerine odaklanmaktadır.Bu nedenle, tezin amacı, çok katmanlılığa bağlı kültürel önemi temel alarak,katmanların mevcut kentle olan iliskilerinin kentteki süreklilik, kesinti ve dönüsümalanlarının yeniden belirlenmesi, yorumlanması sonucunda, tarihi katmanlasmanınaçığa çıkartılması ve korunması için sunum prensipleri olusturmaktır.Bu amaçla, tez; sunum prensiplerinin belirlenmesi ve kültürel önemi belirleyen bilgigruplarının tespiti ile bu prensiplerinin uygulandığı örnek çalısma olmak üzere ikibölümden olusmaktadır. Bununla beraber, örnek çalısma alanı özelinde, tasarımsürecini yönlendiren sunum stratejileri öneri ile beraber örnek çalısma alanınınkültürel öneminin belirlenmesi için bilgi grupları olusturulmustur. Sunumprensiplerinin uygulanması amacıyla, sunum potansiyeli olan Tarsus, bir çokkatmanlı kent olarak seçilmistir.Sonuç olarak, çok katmanlı kentlerin kültürel önemine dayalı olarak, sunum buönemin anlasılması ve yayılması için bir yöntemdir. Tezde önerilen sunumprensipleri, kentlerin çok katmanlılık karakterinin korunması ve sürdürülmesi içinönemlidir ve koruma sürecinin bir parçası olarak değerlendirilmelidirler.

The main subject of the thesis is ?multi-layered historical towns? which are formed asa result of collective creation process and continuous inhabitancy that new buildings,edifices and open areas superimpose in time forming a specific character which canbe defined as multi-layeredness. Considering the specific character of multi-layeredtowns, the principles for the presentation of historical stratification is the foremostobjective of the thesis.The thesis focuses on `presentation principles? based on cultural significance ofmulti-layered historical towns so as to conserve, sustain and present their specificcharacter as an integral part of the conservation process.Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to determine ?presentation principles? for multilayeredhistorical towns in order to reveal and conserve their historical stratificationby assessing the historical continuities, interruptions and transformations based onthe cultural significance of multi-layeredness.Focusing on this aim, the thesis is structured in two parts as the identification ofpresentation principles for multi-layered historical towns, discussing the informationgroups effecting the determination of cultural significance followed by theimplementation of these principles on a concrete example as the case study.Subsequently, a proposal for the presentation principles guiding the design stagestogether with the identification of information groups for the determination of culturalsignificance is apprehended for the case study.The case study selected in the thesis for the implementation of the proposedprinciples is Tarsus which is a multi-layered historical town in Turkey havingpresentation potential for historical stratification.To conclude, depending on the cultural significance specific to multi-layeredhistorical towns, presentation is a way for the understanding and dissemination ofthese significances. The presentation principles set in this thesis can be regarded asa part of the conservation planning that has to be integrated to the existing processand it is possible to state that these principles are essential for the conservation andsustainability of multi-layered character of historical towns.
