Dr. Ali EryılmazNisan 2006, 238 sayfaBu çalışmada, Türkiye'de ilköğretim ve ortaöğretim okullarında geliştirilebilecekAstronomi programı için gerekli verilerin elde edilmesi için bir ihtiyaç analizi yapılmıştır.htiyaç analizinin öğrenci ve öğretmen boyutunun araştırılması için Türkiye'nin Ankara ilisınırları içerisinde merkeze bağlı Keçiören, Çankaya, Yenimahalle, Altındağ, Mamak veSincan ilçelerindeki Milli Eğitim Bakanlığına bağlı 35 ilköğretim ve 20 ortaöğretim okulunda2004-2005 güz döneminde anket uygulanmasına gidilmiştir. 2133 ilköğretim ve 1180 10.sınıf ortaöğretim öğrencisine ve 37 ilköğretim ve ortaöğretim öğretmenine ulaşılmıştır.Bu çalışmanın ilk aşaması, uluslararası fen programlarının taranmasını ve Astronomive Astronomi eğitimi ile ilgili yapılmış olan araştırmaların değerlendirmesini içermektedir.Tarama sonucu elde edilen bulgulara göre, uluslararası fen programlarında astronomieğitimine büyük önem verildiği ve pek çok gelişmiş ülkede ilköğretim ve ortaöğretimdüzeyinde astronomi standartları olduğu bulgusuna rastlanmıştır. Ancak, uluslararası fenprogramları ile kıyaslandığında ülkemizin Astronomi eğitimine verdiği önemin istenilendüzeyde olmadığı görülmüştür. Özellikle ortaöğretimde astronomi eğitimine yer verilmediğive astronomi eğitimi ile ilgili ulusal fen eğitimi içinde astronomi standartlarınınoluşturulmadığı görülmüştür.Çalışmanın ikinci aşaması, öğrenci, öğretmen ve uzman görüşlerinin alınmasıdır.Öğrenci ve öğretmen görüşlerine ulaşmak için anket çalışması yapılmıştır. Anketler altı altkategorisine cevap bulmak için hazırlanmıştır. Bu alt kategorik problemler; astronomi ile ilgilihazırlanacak bir programın içeriği, eğitim ve öğretim yöntemi, değerlendirme, eğitim ortamıve olanakları, astronominin önemi ve son olarak öğrencilerin demografik özelliklerininastronomi tercihleriyle olan ilişkisi olarak sıralanabilir.Anket çalışması ile ulaşılan uzmanların ve öğretmenlerin böyle bir astronomi dersininilköğretim 6. sınıftan itibaren ilköğretim müfredatında olması gerektiği düşüncesine olumlubaktığı ve böyle bir astronomi dersinin ortaöğretim müfredatında da olması gerektiği fikrinesahip oldukları görülmüştür. Benzer şekilde, anket çalışması ile ulaşılan ilköğretim veortaöğretim öğrencilerinin astronominin bir ders olarak okutulmasını istedikleri görülmüştür.Öğretmenlerin ve öğrencilerin, uluslararası düzeyde belirlemiş olan astronomi programlarınınsahip olduğu içeriğe benzer talepleri olduğu bulgusuna ulaşılmıştır.Son olarak, öğretmen ve öğrenci görüşlerinden elde edilen verilere göre astronomi ileilgili anketlerde verilen konuların yüksek yüzdelerle istendiği görülmüştür. Eğitim ve öğretimmetodu olarak açık, anlaşılır ve gündelik yaşamla ilişkili deney ve projelerin olmasınıistedikleri ortaya çıkmıştır. Performansa bağlı değerlendirmenin tercih edildiği bulgusunaulaşılmıştır. Eğitim ortamının görsel malzemelerle desteklenmesini ve eğitim sürecindeöğrenci öğretmen işbirliğinin sağlanmasını bekledikleri görülmüştür. Böyle bir dersin dünyayıve evreni daha iyi tanımalarına yardımcı olacağına inandıkları bilgisine ulaşılmıştır.

ABSTRACTA NEEDS ANALYSIS TO DEVELOP AN ASTRONOMY PROGRAM FOR TURKISHELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLSKahraman, OktayMS, Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics EducationSupervisor: Assist. Prof. Dr. Ali EryılmazApril 2006, 238 pagesIn this study, needs analysis has been made to gather the necessary data for developinga possible astronomy program for elementary and secondary schools in Turkey. In order tocollect and to determine the students? and teachers? needs, 35 elementary schools and 20secondary schools in the six districts (Keçiören, Çankaya, Yenimahalle, Altındağ, Mamak andSincan) of Ankara in Turkey has been visited during 2004-2005 fall semester. 2133elementary and 1180 secondary school students, and 37 teachers were involved in the study.In the first part of this study, the international science curricula were examined andthe studies related with the concepts of astronomy and astronomy education was analyzed.According to the gathered data from the literature, it was observed that in the internationalscience curricula astronomy education has an important part and most developed countrieshave astronomy standards in their elementary and secondary school. However, the importanceof Turkish National Education given on Astronomy education was not as high as it wassupposed to be compared to the international science programs. Also, it was viewed that thereis no Astronomy education during secondary school education; there are no standards forAstronomy education in the national science education policy.In the second part of this study, the elementary and secondary school students? andteachers? opinions were collected. The opinions of the students and the teachers have beencollected via questionnaires. These questionnaires have been designed to find answers to sixsub-categories of the main problem. The sub-categories can be listed as the content of theprogram that was aimed to be developed, teaching and learning methods, evaluation period,educational atmosphere and facilities, significance of the astronomy course, and lastly therelationship between the students? demographic features and preference of astronomyeducation.According to the gathered data from the questionnaires, the teachers supported the ideathat a possible Astronomy course should be included in the curriculum of elementaryeducation starting with the 6th grade, and they had a common opinion that an astronomycourse should take part also in secondary school education. Moreover, most of the studentswho attended this study want to have a separate astronomy course in their education. Also, thefindings revealed that there is a parallelism between the astronomy programs defined in theinternational arena and the teachers? and students opinions about the content of the astronomycourse in this study.To conclude, it was observed that the astronomy subjects listed in the questionnairewas selected with high percentages. Besides, for teaching and learning method theparticipants in the study wanted experiments and projects that are clear, comprehensible andrelated to daily life experiences. Also, performance based evaluation was supported in theevaluation process. Moreover, an education environment where there are visual basedmaterials and teacher-student cooperation is expected when teaching astronomy subjects.Lastly, according to teachers and students, the most important benefit of teaching and learningastronomy is getting information and recognizing the facts about the Earth and the Universe.
