Tills investigation lias been conducted in order to quantitatively, evaluate the, possible variation tendencies of some important physical properties of1 field soils, sşuch as volume weights and water contents, with distance. The experiment was set up on Arık Series Situated on Ç.U. Faculty of Agriculture Experimental Form. Soil samples were taken at 5 m : intervals ; on two 100 m axes placed in lorth-South and East-West directions. The sampled soil depths were 0-20, 20-40 and 40-60 cm in the direction of North- South and 0-20 cm in that of East-West; yielding a total of 80 soil samples, The varition tendencies of overmentioned sail properties were quantitatively evaluated utilizing the technique of semi-variograms which is a method of geostatistics. It was found that the variabilities related to soil moisture content and volume weigth is dependent on distance, For volume weigths, reliable sampling interval was definable in space within 35 mm. In other words, the variabilities of measured volume weigths are interdependent within 35 m sampling interval, The reliability of the sampling would be increased by choosing shorter intervals than 35 m since larger intervals would not yield representative samples. The distributions beyond 35 m are not dependent on distance and are totally random. ;The distances in which the moisture content measurements are space dependent are 35 m in East-West and 33 m in North-South directions, In a sampling scheme in order to collect soil samples for determination of ' moisture content the sampling network must be established in such a way that the sampling interval is equal or shorter than 35 m in East-West, 33 m in North-South directions. The sampling intervals larger than above values are expected to reflect only the random variations of the sample area. That is, by increasing the distance between the samples, the degree of influence among the measured variables will be weakened, Despite the outcome that the reliable sampling intervals were found to be larger than 33-35 m for 20-40 and 40-60 cm depths, the 33 and 35 m intervals was accepted for these depths-31- in either directions in order to unify the sampling- intervals for all soil depths. It has been shown in this work that the variation tendencies of the soil physical properties such as volume weigths and moisture contents are functions of distance and been suggested that sail maps showing these properties can be prepared once the most reliable sampling network is determined.
