Özmen, Neslihan, Temporal Relations in Discourse: A model proposal for theoptimal interpretation based on Turkish data, Doctorate Dissertation, Advisor: Assoc.Prof. Gülsün Leyla Uzun, 183 p.AbstractThe aim of this dissertation is to propose a model for the optimalinterpretation of temporal structure in discourse. In the model which is based onthe basic principles and methods of Optimality Theory, a set of constraints whichplay a role on the interpretation of temporal structure in discourse are proposedand the interactions between these constraints are presented. The model which isdeveloped on the basis of Turkish data includes three basic constraints whichdetermine the temporal structure in discourse: Temporal Faithfulness Constraint,Time Constraint and Contingency Constraint which is a component of AvoidTemporal Contradiction Constraint. Temporal Faithfulness Constraint and TimeConstraint are described as Faithfulness Constraints which take the compositionalmeanings of the sentences in a discourse into account. In certain cases wherethese Faithfulness Constraints are violated, Contingency and Avoid TemporalContradiction Constraints come into effect for the optimal interpretation. It isobserved that no temporal relation is inferred in cases where TemporalFaithfulness Constraint, Time Constraint and Contingency Constraints areviolated. Within the framework of the model which is developed on the basis of theprinciple that takes the interpretation of the temporal structure in discourse as anoptimization process, it is concluded that Temporal Faithfulness Constraint issatisfied in narrative discourses.
