keywords: PMMA, Uniaxially Drawing, Biaxially Drawing, Mechanical Anisotropy, ElasticConstant, Ultrasonic Wave Velocity.Abstract: In this study, uniaxially and biaxially mechanical anisotropy of PMMA, which isused in many areas such as otical application and PVC which is used in construction sector,were investigated experimantally. Theoretical relationship was investigated betweenuniaxially mechanical anisotropy and biaxially mechanical anisotropy.Commercial PMMA and PVC were drawn uniaxially and biaxially in constant speed andtemperature using a specially designed drawing system. Wave velocities of drawn sampleswere measured in three principal directions and three principal planes by ultrasonicspectrometer. Measurements were carried out at a constant frequency of 748 kHz and roomtemperature. Since the thickness of oriented samles are greater than the diameter oftranducers, difficulty in measuring in each of two drawing lanes by using the immersiontechnique was solved by using a special slicing method. With this velocities, elastic constansof uniaxialy were calculated considering hexagonal symmetry and biaxialy drawn sampleswere calculated due to orthorhombic symmetry.For PVC samples, elastic constants equations of hexagonal and orthorhombic structure weregiven as fonctions of sum of drawind ratio in two directions. Elastic constants oforthorhombic structure were given kinds of elastic constants of hexagonal structure as lineerfunctions including draw ratio by experimental results.
