Özet

This thesis aims at analysing ?New Religious Movements? (NRM) which emerged in the context of social transformations in recent years. Religion continues to influence social life in various ways in parallel with political, social, cultural and economic changes. It is seen as a significant factor which gathers momentum and acquires salience in some regions. These developments turned the attention of social scientists to NRMs today. The thesis consists of four main chapters. The chapter entitled as ?Historical Transformations Towards Modern Society? examines the impact of macro processes such as Renaissance, Reformation, French Revolution, Industrial Revolution, modernization and secularization on religion and religious institutions in the West. The chapter on ?Sociological Approaches to Religious Institutions and Organizations? examines theories about the dominant religious organizations (church, sect, denomination and cult) and religious groups that emerge following a split from a church as discussed by scholars such as M. Weber, E. Troeltsch, R. Niebuhr, H. Becker and M. Yinger. The chapter on ?New Religious Movements: Definitons and Sociological Typologies? deals with the general definitons and origins of NRMs and differecens between these movements and traditional types of religious organizations. This chapter examines the therories of sociologists such as B. Hargrove, J. Lofland and J. Richardson, D. Bromley, G. Melton, D. Anthony, T. Robbins, F. Bird, R. Stark, W. Bainbridge, R. Wallis and J. Beckford in detail. The chapter entitled as ?New Religious Movements: Some Samples? analyses various popular NRMs focusing on their founders, teachings, rituals and their inter and intra-group relations. Özet (Çeviri)

The origins of the christian fundamentalism in The United States are found in the nineteenth-century. In the first quarter of the twentieth-century, the movement took its concrete form. The social base of fundamentalism was strengthened by forming fundamentalist schools, churches, universities, hospitals and media (televisions, magazines, radio programmes...). When the fundamentalist movement had enough power, it didn?t hesitate to enter the political arena. This study that focuses on the Protestant fundamentalism in the United States analyzes the fundamentalist beliefs, doctrines and also the historical background of fundamentalism in the United States. Moreover, it examines the arguments of the fundamentalists in America about family, gender, politics and the members of other religions. One of the most distinguishing feature of fundamentalists in America is their approach toward Jews. They support Israil without any provision and take the position against muslims.
