Artificial ground freezing is a technique that has been used extensively for groundwatercontrol and excavation support in the underground construction industry for over acentury. The process involves the circulation of a refrigerated coolant through a series ofsubsurface pipes to convert soil water to ice, creating a strong watertight material.Frozen soil is nearly as strong as concrete and is impermeable, making it ideal forshoring and groundwater cutoff.In this work the main idea of Artificial Ground Freezing (AGF) is explained, and themethod is discussed. In order, soil properties and phase relations in freezing, thermalsoil properties and method is given and finally a case study in Vienna Subway SystemU2 is given as an example.This thesis reviews and examines the ground freezing as a stabilization method forfoundation engineering and tunneling. There were some experiments which werecarried out in TU Vienna in order to understand the behavior of frost heave due torelation with water content, and the effect of speed of freezing on heaving. Thecorrelations of the test results showed that when fast freezing put in practice, growing ofice lenses would be less compared to slow rate freezing. This means there will be moreheaving in slow rate freezing. Also heaving phenomena is correlated with the watercontent ratio so that if water content ratio increases, the amount of heaving wouldincrease.
