ABSTRACT ENVIRONMENTAL RECOVERY OF IZMIR INNER BAY DETERMINATION OF EFFECT OF SEDIMENT LOAD ON BAY WATER QUALITY TEKİN, Hüseyin M.S. in Environmental Engineering Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Turgut İ. BALKAŞ September, 1992, 102 pages. In this study, heavy metal pollution and its distribution in the İzmir Inner Bay sediments is investigated. Sediments were choosen as the pollution indicator for the bay, and the present heavy metal pollution state of the sediments of the Inner Bay were reviewed. According to the results, the distribution of heavy metal concentrations from coast to open bay sediments were determined. In heavy metal analysis, Cr, Fe, Mn, Cu, Ni, Zn, Al, Co and Pb measurements were carried out on bed sediments. Among these metals, Cr and Zn were determined as the most important pollution parameters affecting the bay environment. In addition to the concentration analysis, enrichment factor and correlation coefficient analysis were performed to observe the relation between the heavy metal concentration distributions along the Bay. According to the distribution of metal concentrations, the enrichment factor and correlation coefficient calculations, Melez, Manda and Arap streams were determined as the most significant heavy metal pollution sources in the area. Appropriate alternatives for the reduction of reexchange of pollution from bottom sediments to sea water is also recommended.
