Reading in a language either L1 or L2 is a complex and multifaceted activity. It requirescognitive, metacognitive, motivational and social processes. This study aims to investigatequalitatively the role of goal orientation in reading comprehension both in L1 and L2, and readingstrategy use in L1 and L2 of the Turkish advanced students of English Language Teaching (ELT)Department in order to understand the pedagogical aspects of reading and make implications aboutthem. The data of this phenomenological study come from one-on-one, semi-structured interviewscarried out with 8 Turkish ELT students; 4 preparatory class, 4 first-year students, who take readingcourse. The data of the study were analysed by means of phenomenological data analysis methods. The results of the study demonstrated that the participants had a variety of goal orientationswhich lend support to the multiple goal approach that claims the reasons students have for engagingin the academic endeavours influence the goals they adopt. All the participants whatever their goalorientations are use reading strategies, and they perceive them as helpful. As they view reading inEnglish more demanding than reading in Turkish, they reported that they use more strategies inEnglish. The data of the study evidenced that mastery goal oriented, and high mastery and lowperformance-approach participants use more strategies than the performance-approach (except forone) and work-avoidant participants. Mastery goal oriented students seemed to be more persistentwhen they confront a comprehension problem in English. All of them think that there is a necessityto teach reading strategies to the students both in their L1 and L2.
