Turkish people have created many works of decorative arts, that have never been researched in detail up to this time. No matter the architect is a civilian or a religious person they haven't had the aim of constructing a building only but they have also concentrated on the inner decoration. One of those inner decorations is the coloured embroideries sometimes called as kalem işi which are used on wood, plaster and stones. The art of embroidery has its origin in Middle Asia and it also has the characteristics of Anatolia. It was also affected by the Great Seljuks and the Anatolian Seljuks and finally by the Ottomans. The samples of kalem işi that are seen at the constructions in Artvin (the centre of our research) and in districts are categorized into two groups according to their ceiling systems. The first group is in the ceiling of private place and it has a joint style: Artvin Merkez Zeytinlik Köyü Mosque, Şavşat Atalar Köyü Mosque, Şavşat Cevizli Köyü Mosque, Yusufeli Kömürlü Köyü Mosque, Hopa Sugören Köyü Mosque, Arhavi Ortacalar Köyü Mosque. The joint parts are decorated with the vegetal and geometric designs. These coloured designs can be seen on the other places like the barriers of the meeting place of women and the ornamental borders of those barriers, the walls, the borders of the windows. The composition of repetition and the design of tulip are mostly seen on this group of embroideries. One of the most important constructions of this group is Şavşat Cevizli Köyü Mosque, which is decorated with the unusual geometric designs and the other is Arhavi Ortacalar Köyü Mosque, which has unusual kalem işi produced with the technique of stamp.119 The second group is the variation of the ceiling system in the first group. Instead of using the joint, a dome is constructed: Artvin Merkez Zeytinlik Oruçlu Köyü Mosque, Şavşat Merkez Kemal Paşa Mosque, Şavşat Çorakla Köyü Mosque, Şavşat Çermik Köyü Mosque, Ardanuç Adakale İskender Paşa Mosque, Borçka Muratlx Köyü Mosque, Hopa Orta Hopa Mahallesi Mosque, Hopa Sarp Köyü Mosque, Hopa Çamlıköy Mosque, Arhavi Dikyamaç Köyü Mosque, Arhavi Aşağı Şahinler Köyü Mosque, Arhavi Ulukent Köyü Mosque. All those constructions have domes in their centres. The first difference from the first group is the change in place and material of the decoration. Kalem işleri are applied in the plastered domes. In addition embroderies can be seen on the ornamental borders of the meeting places, on the pulpits, on the focuses, on the ceiling and on the doors. The composition of repetition and single design (such as flowers in a vase) the design of curtain, tulip and daisy are used at this group of embroideries. One of the characteristics seen in Artvin and in the districts is the kalem işi on stones which is so unusual: (Artvin Merkez Salih Bey Mosque Portal i and the niche of Arhavi Dikyamaç Köyü Mosque) The other characteristic is the close relation between the works of the art of kalem işi and the works of wooden engraving. As a conclusion it can be said that Artvin district, that is a complex centre having different styles of art, was an important centre of especially the art of wooden engraving and the art of kalem işi.
