SUMMARY in Turkey, during 1989 a decreasing «aas obseved on precipitation amount, in this result agricultural product, hydroelectric poımer product and big cities drinking water problems came, it depended to appear some discussions. in this investigation the characteristics of precipitation of Turkey in 1989 «nere shouved and the effects of it were also investigated. in Turkey, the average and 1989 datum 104 centre «nere investigated and the datum of 23 of them especially investigated about the dispersion of preci¬ pitation through the year. The precipitation activity of these 104 centre was shouued with charts by using investigation process. Uncontrolled rivers (it hasn't any dam), disconnected lake (endoreic basin), agricultural production and electric energy production tinere investigated and by using this investigation, the effects of precipitation were defined. If, the bases of this investigalion are the geographical principles like dpfinition, distribution, causality, comparing and relationship, we cnn say Ihe results of invcsligations, uıhich ı/uas done by using modern climatoiogicai process like these: l- it was mentioned that except of East and West Blacksea Regions, there was a decreasing on precipitations during 1989. Decreasing on preci¬ pitation reached the maximum rate in Southuuest and Middle Anatolia, Eagean and Mediterraneanian Regions and after them; Marmarian and East Anatolia Regions. in 90% of Turkey, the precipitation that was observed less than average. The roasons of the decreasing on precipitation of Turkey: were the lack of rainfall with a high rate, irregularity of precipitation during ali year and the diffusing of the lack of precipitation through furkey. As o result ı/ue couldn'n find extrem values of total rainfall 47during this period at 23 rainfall observation centers which datum investi gated briefly. 2- Total amounts of precipitation at investigated rainfall centers except of Artvin, were the minumum values between 1985-1989' values. But the precipitation of Artvin continued to rise and reached the value of 1989' precipitation. 3- The lack of precipitation in 1989 started in December 1989. During March and May months, a relative rising on precipitation was obser ved, but except of a few station in the north of Turkey, the total preci pitation of Turkey couldn't reach the average. The general lack of precipitation continued till September, and stoped in October-December period. 4- The lack of precipitation of that was especially seen in five months of 1989, occured because of the cold drop characterised high pres sure centre (continental polar air mass) that centralized in inner parts of Anatolian and the weaknes of moistury air mass. Between October-December, this negative position was stoped. 5- As to activity of precipitation, except of Blacksea Region; semi-arid and arid areas expanded in all regions. In Çukurova arid area, in İğdır very arid, and in Cogean Region arid areas occured. After 3-4 years period they reached the levels of them in 1989 like precipitation values. During the year, in general, 1,2,4,6,7,8,9. month were semi-arid and arid, other months were moisty and semi-moisty. The quantity of semi-arid and months increased. 6- The relative currents of selected rivers, except of the rivers like Çoruh, Filyos, Karanlık which are in Blacksea Region during 1989 went along below the averages. The level of Van Lake in September 1989 lower 48than the level in September 1988. As to Burdur Lake, the decreasing of the level was observed as 63 cm and during 1989 a continuously decreasing was observed. 7- The agricultural product in 1989 decreased because of the lack of precipitation and aridity. It was clearly seen in lentil, wheat and bar ley. Even in the production of maize, which is the classical agricultural product of Blacksea Region Which in the precipitation was observed like averages and over averages, an increasing couldn't be seen because of the decreasing in the sowing lands. The space was closed by importing. The increasing in the values of precipitation also increased the humudity of soil. 8- The production of hydroelectric energy decrease about 38% accor ding to the 1988. The space was closed by working had of workers which worked in thermoelectric energy producting area. 9- Hydrographic, agricultural production and hydroelectric energy production investigations showed that, the lack and irregularity of preci pitation and aridity diffused and effective fol all over the Turkey. 10- As an agricultural country, it can be clearly seen that the lack of precipitation effects the economy of Turkey so much. It is clear that especially in April-June the precipitation have to be investigated and the warnings must be done and improvided about them. 49
