93 ABSTRACT This study investigates the effects of free play on divergent thinking in preschool age children. The first part of the study includes the theoretical explanations of play and divergent thinking, the problem, the aim and the importance of the study. The second part contains the reseach procedure, instruments used in the study, and analysis of the data. The third part of the study deals with findings, and discussion. The fourth part consists of the summary, conclusions, and suggestions for future researchs. The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of free play on divergent thinking. 60 Children were chosen for the sample of the study from different preschool institutions. After preobservations, children were assigned randomly to the experimental and two control conditions. (Free play, divergent activity imitation, convergent problem solving.) All the children in all groups were given alternate-uses task. Subjects in the free play group named significantly more nonstandard uses for each of the four objects than the subjects in control groups. Generally, it was concluded that playful activity can provide children with an opportunity to organize their experiences and exercise their cognitive abilities in a manner that is likely to facilitate imaginative adaptations to future situations.
