ABSTRACT This study aims to develop an analytical framework by which the impact of international migration on foreign policy can be studied. In order to achieve a better understanding of the topic, this thesis will define the variables, which determine whether and in what ways international population movements have an impact on the foreign policies of receiving states. After an introduction, which explains the scope and purpose of this study, there is a chapter which is entirely devoted to an explanation of the analytical framework. In order to be able to see how this framework can be applied, this thesis also presents some examples from two case studies in the following chapters. The development of an analytical framework requires that the ways in which international migration can have an impact are spelled out. In essence there are three possibilities. (1) The admission and treatment of one country's nationals in another country may become the subject of interstate dealings between the two countries. (2) Migration may lead to the establishment of ethnic communities in the countries of destination, and (3) international migration may alter the ethnic, linguistic and religious composition of the countries of destination in the long-term. The aim of this thesis is to define the variables, which help to explain the variances in the degree to which international migration has an impact on foreign policies in the three ways described above. This is accomplished by employing the globalist approach to international relations, since alternative approaches do not appreciate the properties of the phenomenon. -iv-
