Özet
Osmanlı ordusunun son yüz yılındaki modernizasyon süreci, toplumsal hayatın tamamında uygulamaya konulmaya çalışılan modern uygulamaların bir parçasıdır. Bu nedenle ordu modernleşmesi, Osmanlı ekonomik yapısının kapitalizme entegrasyonu, vergi sistemlerinin dönüşümü ve toplumda yerel otoritelere dayalı parçalanmış yapının yerine merkeziyetçi devletin tesis edilmesiyle bağlantılı bir süreç olarak gelişti.Söz konusu ordu modernizasyonu, ordu kullanılan silah teknolojisinin modernize edilmesi, subay eğitiminin dönüştürülmesi, askeri hiyerarşinin ve ordu örgütlenmesinin yeni baştan inşa edilmesi şeklinde olmuştur. Ne var ki ordu modernize edilirken bu modernizasyonu besleyecek bir ekonomik ve toplumsal taban olmadığından, ordu modernizasyonu, Osmanlı'nın geleneksel ekonomik ve toplumsal yapısında gücünü koruyan geleneksel toplumsal yapılar tarafından frenlenmiştir. Bu frenleyici mekanizmalar genel olarak demodernizasyon kavramıyla tanımlanabilir.Osmanlı'nın girdiği son üç büyük savaş olan 93 Harbi, Balkan Savaşı ve 1. Dünya Savaşı, Osmanlı ordusunda modernizasyon anlamında kat edilen mesafenin ve bu modernizasyonu frenleyen demodernizasyon unsurlarının gücünün pratik alanda test edildiği bir laboratuar işlevi görmüştür. Bu üç savaşın sosyo-tarihsel analizi, Osmanlı ordusundaki modernizasyon ve demodernizasyonun haritasını verir.

The process of modernization of the Ottoman army in its last century was a part of the modernization policies applied in all areas of life. For this reason, modernization of the army developed simultaneously with other modernization processes such as the integration of the Ottoman economy to the capitalist system, transformation of the tax system and establishing a centralist state structure in the society instead of the fragmented local authorities.The modernization of the army occurred in the form of modernizing the armament technology, reforming the education of the military officers and reconstructing the military organization and hierarchy. However, since there was not an economical and social substructure making this modernization possible, modernization of the army was hurdled by the traditional structures inherent in the Ottoman social and economical structure. These agents that hurdled modernization were defined with the concept of demodernization.The three great wars of the Ottoman army?the 93 War, The Balkan War and the First World War?functioned like a laboratory which offered practical ground to analyze the level achieved in the modernization process and the power exerted by the demodernization factors. The socio-historical analysis of these three wars provides us a map of the modernization and demodernization factors of the Ottoman army.
