ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to investigate the role and importance of presupposition in reading comprehension. The first chapter of this study includes the background knowledge to the study, the purpose and scope of the study while the second chapter stresses some theoretical issues on pragmatics and presupposition. The third chapter concentrates on the results of the questionnaire which has been administered to the students of the Section of English Language Teaching, the Department of the Teaching of Foreign Languages, Gazi Faculty of Education, Gazi University. The subjects are two hundred students who have been divided into two groups, one representing the experiment group, and the other the control group. The data have been obtained and evaluated by using statistical methods, and the findings have been displayed both in tables and graphs. The fourth chapter of the study focuses on presupposition and language teaching. The role and the importance of presupposition in language teaching, especially in reading comprehension have been emphasized in this chapter. Moreover, a sample text has been analyzed in terms of presupposition, and a suggested technique and some activities have been presented in the same chapter. The conclusion chapter provides some suggestions on iiimproving reading comprehension with the help of presupposition. The appendix of the study includes the above mentioned questionnaire, which has mainly two parts. The first part of the questionnaire aims at revealing some knowledge about the respondents, but the second part of it tries to test their prediction ability in reading comprehension in four different types of multiple-choice questions. iii
