ABSTRACT FURTHER STUDY OF SHEAR STRENGTH MEASURED IN THE CYLINDRICAL WEDGE SHEAR TEST SEÇKİN, Altan M.S. Thesis In Civil Engineering Superv i sor: Prof.Dr.Türker M İ RATA January, 1993, 153 pages Higher undrained angles of internal friction at residual ($ ) than at peak strength ($ ) have been observed by several researchers in undrained tests on both undisturbed and compacted plastic clays. The aim of this thesis is to investigate further the behaviour $ >$ of compacted plastic clays through the cylindrical wedge shear test Ccylwest') and to compare the results with those of the shear box test. 'Cylwests' were carried out on the five plastic clays, at moisture contents at which the behaviour > ^ had been observed in r p shear box tests in a past research. However, four of these samples were oven-dried before bringing them to the desired moisture content. Shear box tests were also performed on specimens taken from near the failure plane of 'cylwests'. IllIt was seen that when oven drying was not used, the 'cylwest yields $ > 6 both at end of the first run and at end of re-shear after r p smoothing the shear surfaces. For the samples which had been oven- dried initially, the condition $ > $ was observed in 'cyl wests' at end of r p the first run only, but this strength seems to reflect the property of two irregular surfaces moving relative to each other rather than the true residual strength of the soil. It has also been observed that oven- drying causes significant changes in the Atterberg limits and compaction properties of clays, and apparently also in their shear strength.
