Aim: This study is to ascertain how a treadmill exercise for short, intermediate and long duration -i.e., 15-minute, 30-minute and 60-minute exercises may affect frequency and amplitude of epileptiform activity that is induced on rats. Material and Method: In the study a total of 32 rats were used in four 8-rat groups of 15-minutes, 30-minutes, 60-minutes exercise and the control group. Rats were run on a certain protocol everyday at the same time for 90 days. In the late part, elektrocortikogram (ECoG) recording were conducted for 3 hours with the 4-channel PowerLab data acquisition unit after administering 500 IU penicillin in the left cortex of the rats by micro-injection. Consequently, the frequency and amplitude values of the records were analyzed. Results: It was the 15-min exercise group that reduced the frequency of epileptiform activity most effectively and most rapidly. Frequency of epileptiform activity in the 15-min exercise group decreased significantly after the 70th minute, and this significance continued till the end of the experiment. It was found that in the 30-min and 60-min exercise groups the frequency decreased significantly after 90 minutes, and the statistical significance continued until the end of the 180th minute in the 30-min and 60-min exercise groups, respectively. Finally, no significant difference was found between the spike amplitudes of each groups p<0.05). Conclusion: That a treadmill exercise for short, intermediate and long duration does affect the frequency of penicillin-induced epileptiform activity is found for the first time by this study. This finding can be expected to contribute to the endeavors to increase the quality of life of epileptic patients.
