11 ABSTRACT In this thesis, Assembly Line Balancing (ALB) Process is studied in detail and the available algorithms are covered. A heuristic algorithm for solving the simple line balancing problem is proposed. An intensive experimentation is carried out for comparing the algorithm developed in this thesis with well-known heuristics in this area. Two criteria are involved in the comparison of heuristics. One of them is the balance delay for each one and the second is the number of best and worst solutions achieved on one hundred hypothetical problems. The results are tabulated statistically.
