The purpose of· this study was to understand and investigate the effects of the classroom social environment on the academic achievement of the students. Specifically, the impact of the classroom environment of junior high school classrooms on academic aChievement was investigated. Two hundred and forty five junior high school students participated in this study. Hundred and five subjects were sixth graders, 140 subjects were seventh graders. This study was accomplished by administering a questionnaire. The Turkish translated version of Classroom Environment Scale (Tuter, 1989) was used in this study. The ~ndependent variable was classroom social environment as perceived by the children in that classroom measured by administering Classroom Environment Scale. The dependent variable was students' academic achievement measured by grades those students got at the end of the second semester. Turkish Literature; Turkish History and Mathematics courses were chosen to be investigated. Stepwise Mul tiple Regression Analyses were performed on the subscale scores of the Classroom Environment Scale and the grades of each student for different course in order to determine the relationships between the subscales of the CES and academic achievement as measured by grades. Rule Clarity, Teacher Control, Order and Organisation subscales were found to be effective in explaining the difference in academic achievement. Further research with larger samples, different grade levels, different sGhools may help us to gain a better understanding of the relationship between classroom environment and academic achievement.
