Özet

Bu çalışmanın amacı,“töre komedisi”türünün İngiliz tiyatrosu içindeki tarihsel gelişimini antik dönemden İkinci Dünya Savaşı sonuna kadar olan süreçte incelemek ve Harold Pinter'ın The Homecoming ve Joe Orton'un What the Butler Saw oyunlarına bakarak, bu türün savaş sonrası dönemdeki politik tavrı ve duruşunu analiz etmektir. Töre komedisi, temelde, üst sınıfın kültürlü ve yapmacık tavır, davranış, gelenek ve yaşam biçimlerini gösteren bir komedi türüdür. Ancak bu tür, ele aldığı toplumun yozlaşmış ve ahlak dışı yanlarını düzeltmeyi değil, sadece bu durumu sahneleyip güldürmeyi amaçlar. Bu sebeple de töre komedisi, savaş sonrası döneme kadar politik tiyatronun bir temsilcisi olarak görülmemiştir. Fakat, İkinci Dünya Savaşı'nı izleyen dönemde, adı geçen İngiliz oyun yazarları türün geleneksel yapısını ve hedeflerini değiştirmiş, böylelikle, türün önceki örneklerinden farklı olarak, alt ve orta sınıfın yaşam biçimlerini ön plana alarak daha politik oyunlar üretmişlerdir. Bu çalışma, töre komedisi türünün yüzyıllar boyunca yaşadığı değişimi ve gelişimi gözden geçirdikten sonra, son bölümde, Harold Pinter'ın The Homecoming ve Joe Orton'un What the Butler Saw oyunlarını, İkinci Dünya Savaşı sonrası İngilteresinde aile değerleri, toplumsal cinsiyet rolleri, cinsel kimlikler ve tercihler açısından inceleyecektir. Böylelikle bu çalışma, bu tür politik konuları ele alarak, töre komedisinin İngiliz toplumu ve İngiliz tiyatrosu içindeki değişen politik değerleri nasıl yansıttığını değerlendirip inceleyecektir.

The aim of this work is to examine the history and the development of“comedy of manners”in British theatre throughout centuries, from the ancient world to the post-war Britain, and to analyse its political position and attitude in the post-war period by analysing The Homecoming by Harold Pinter and What the Butler Saw by Joe Orton. Comedy of manners principally is a style of comedy that reflects the life, manners and customs of sophisticated upper class; yet the genre does not aim to correct the follies and corruption in a given society but just to demonstrate it to produce laughter. For that reason, comedy of manners was not considered as a representative of political theatre until the post-war period. However, after the Second World War, mentioned British playwrights changed the conventional structure and the aim of the genre, and produced more political plays by foregrounding the lower and middle class life distinct from the previous examples. After examining the development of comedy of manners throughout centuries, in the final chapter, The Homecoming by Harold Pinter and What the Butler Saw by Joe Orton will be analyzed in terms of reflecting family values, gender roles, sexual identities and sexual orientation in the post-war Britain. Therefore, by focusing on such political issues, this work will review and scrutinize the ways that comedy of manners reflect the changing political values in the post-war British society and theatre.
