ABSTRACT A theory for the lateral bending stability of prestressed concrete girders free to roll at the supports is presented. The factor of safety is dependent on the height of the roll axis, the initial lateral eccentricity, the lateral stiffness, and the maximum permissible tilt angle of the beam. The theory is compared to the PCI Design Handbook and to field experience. In the preparation of this thesis, some works and tests that are done abroad were used as the source of information; some equalities were provided in the production to avoid the problem, and the subject was developped by adding the flaws of these equalities. According to these equalities, a simple computer program was given. This program was proved to be applicable and it has been used in our countryin the calculation of prestressed bridge beams. Especially the behaviours of TCK Type Bridge Beams were analyzed in terms of the lateral stability problem and it was noticed that they are extremely safe. The span length of TCK type beams were mcreased keeping the width of their cross-section constant, and by determining their weakness jn terms of lateral stability problems, it was showed what the results of these problems are at the moment of lifting (in the production and in the trasportation.) Afterwards, it was proven by certain calculations that this beam is applicable. In the final part, the requirements and propositions for the analysis of the lateral stability safety were offered for the developpment of Turkish Prefabricated Member Standart (TS 9967 ) which is very inadequate.
