There are still many unknown problems regarding one-dimensional consolidation. Several of these important subjects are among the problems examined in this study. Some experimental research on creep of soft Botbkennar clay under one-dimensional compression are undertaken. This is pertinent to understanding the long-term settlement behaviour of embankments built on soft day. Attempts to obtain a better understanding of primary and secondary compression phenomena have led to the development of a new type of consolidation test apparatus. From the results of consolidation tests, the following findings have been derived. The coefficient of the secondary compression and the compressibility is influenced by several factors (loadincrement ratio, specimen thickness, elapsed time, stmctural effect).In Chapter One some problems relating to one dimensional compression testing are described. Information is given on the aim and the scope of this research.In Chapter Two published research on the factors which influence the behaviour of soft clays under one-dimensional compression is reviewed.In Chapter Three some back ground information is given on Botbkennar day which has been used for the research.In Chapter Four the apparatus, Le. consolidometer, used in the tests is described and each type of test carried out is explained. The new apparatus used to measure the friction and the base pore pressure is illustrated and explained.In Chapter Five the results obtained from the tests are discussed.In Chapter Six conclusions are drawn from the results of the test programme and suggestions are made for further work.
