Buccinum undaıum L. (common whelk) is a common northAtlantic predatory gastropod with a tendeney for opportunistie feedingon carrion. Some ecological aspects of the comrnon whelk were studiedoff Douglas, Isle of Man from February 1989 to August 1990. An energybudget was also constructed for one year period between February 1989and January 1990.Values of density estimates of the common whelk in the studyarea using several method s were comparable, for example potsampling (0.08-0.38ind. m-2), direct census using underwater camera(0.33 ind. m-2) and using diving (0.17 ind. m-2), except dredging whichgave a very low density value (0.022ind. m-2). Mark-recaptureexperiment was not successful in determining population density ofwhelks.The effects of tagging on the mortality and growth rate of B.undalum were assessed in the laboratory. The tagging method wasapplied by a careful drilling and wiring a tag onto the edge of the largerwhorl of the whelk. This method was found highly efficient in termsof persistancy. Tagging mortality observed under poor experimentalconditions (Le. space and seawater flow rate) was minimal when theseconditions were improved. The growth of the tagged whelks was,however, significantly slower from that of untagged individuals.The determination of the growth rate of Buccinum off Douglaswas attempted using a few method s (Le.size frequencyand operculumanalysis, mark-recapture experiment). Among thern, size frequeneymethods were found to be most efficient. A von Bertalanffy growthcurve sueeessfully deseribed the growth of Buccinum population ofthis area. The usual growth parameters, Loo and K were ealculated as123.8mm, 0.20, respectively.Long-terrn laboratory observations and field data indicated thatbreeding period of whelks in this area is from autumn to mid-winter.Egg laying oecurred mainly between Deeember and January in thelaboratory. it was observed that the hatehing of the juveniles takesplaee between April and early May, 3-5 months after spawning. Thepattern in the development period of the testis and ovary was almostthe same, especially during the breeding period.The standard International Biologieal Programme (IBP) energybudget equation has been modified to indude a mueus term for thosemueus producing animals. The components of the energy budget (in k]m-2 year-I) for the population can be summarized thus: consumption(C)= 752.65;growth produetion (Pg)= 31.08; reproduetive produetion(Pr)= 4.10; pedal mueus produetion (Mp)= 92.64;hypobranchial mucusproduction (Mh)= 124.39;respiration (R)= 95.97; ammonia exeretion(U)= 7.5 and faeeal produetion (F)= 393.79.Assimilation efficieney was 47.7%. The proportion of assimilatedenergy lost via mueus secretion was 60.5%. Net growth efficieney was10.7%.P/B (annual produetion / biomass) was calculated as 1.40.
