This dissertation aims at explaining the role of identity in Turkey-EU relationsand the effects of the long lasting Turkish quest for membership on the Europeanidentity. The author of this dissertation believes that since Turkey is the only casein the history of the EU enlargement that has generated heated debate on thenature of European identity and the very boundaries of modern Europe, studyingthe role of identity and perceptions of the EU and Turkey with regards to eachother is important. Bearing in mind the serious economic and political problemsof the countries that started negotiating when Turkey was not even shown as acandidate, it is clear that there were other reasons behind Turkey?s exclusion,which, in this text, will be argued as the identity variable. In this respect, the firstchapter is on constructivism and the formulation of EU identity, the secondchapter explains the role of Turkey in the formulation of European identity in ahistorical context, and the last chapter is on Turkey?s membership quest and itseffects on European identity.
