The main thesis of this research argues that the surrounding institutional framework has an impact on the entrepreneurial strategic orientation behaviour of small and medium size enterprises in an emerging economy in a similar urban environment, which consequently has a significant influence on these firms' financial performance. The study aims to present the influence of institutions on small and medium sized enterprises' strategic behaviour and the effect of this on financial performance. The theoretical foundation of the study is provided by institutional theory. More precisely, new institutional economics and new institutional theory form the study's theoretical foundation. Institutions, according to theory, are described as rules of the game and have a pervasive influence on economic activities. It is a well-established assumption in the related literature that organisations are embedded into institutional frameworks in which they try to survive. The research followed a deductive approach combined with quantitative data collection. The study conducts a survey amongst 117 textile and textile-related small and medium sized enterprises operating in Istanbul. Multiple regression analyses were run to test the study's hypotheses and identify the relationship between two sets of factors: institutional frameworks and entrepreneurial strategic orientation; and entrepreneurial strategic orientation and financial performance. The study contributes to scholars' understanding in several areas. First of all, the role of religion as a component of the informal institutional framework is revealed in the thesis. A further contribution is to the understanding of the role of the institutional theory in the strategic management field. Moreover, the impact of Turkey's institutional environment on small and medium sized enterprises is identified and provides valuable insights for scholars. The data analysed required careful interpretation as results were somewhat mixed. It was confirmed that there is a significant relationship between institutional frameworks and entrepreneurial strategic orientation and entrepreneurial strategic orientation and financial performance. However, the explanatory power of regression analysis for the above relationships was relatively low, which present opportunities for future studies in the area of strategic management.
