In human in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment programs, fertilization failure is a very common and important problem. Fertilization failures deserve further researches and investigations because many patients face fertilization failures or total fertilization failures (TFF) during their IVF treatment programs. The aim of my study was to investigate the statistically of conventional in vitro fertilization (cIVF) and introcytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) rates using statistical techniques. The statistical analysis was performed by using Microsoft Excel Program. There were a total of 6755 IVF cases with in the five years, between 08/01/2009 and 28/06/2013, data from the all the patients were examined. The patients' identification was not used in the analysis. All data was taken from the assisted conception unit (ACU) at Guy's and St Thomas' hospital, United Kingdom. Also all IVF/ICSI cycles were performed in the same centre. Fertilization rates were performed according to treatment type (IVF, IVF/PGD, ICSI and PGD/ICSI), age and age versus treatment type for each year. Total fertilization failure (TFF) rates were also performed according to treatment type for each year. During the cIVF treatment, denudation procedure not applied to oocyte therefore; total oocyte number was used to perform fertilization and TFF rates during the research. Fertilization rates of IVF and IVF/PGD were performed according to number of oocyte versus number of two pronuclei (2PN) embryo on the other hand; fertilization rates of ICSI and ICSI/PGD were performed according to number of metaphase II (MII) oocyte versus number of two pronuclei (2PN) embryo. Complete fertilization failure ratio of IVF and IVF/PGD was performed according to number of oocyte and number of two pronuclei (2PN) embryo on the other hand; complete fertilization failure ratio of ICSI and ICSI/PGD were performed according to number of oocyte, number of metaphase II (MII) oocyte and number of two pronuclei (2PN) embryo. For the purpose of this statistic all data was examined very carefully. Ages were separated in to five different groups. The age group which is 24 or less refer to“1”. The age group which is between 25-29 refer to“2”. The age group which is between 30-34 refer to“3”. The ages which are between 35-39 refer to“4”and the ages which are 40 or more are referring to“5”. Independent from the method used, it was generally observed that as the age of the patient increased, fertilization rate decreased. Fertilization rates for ICSI were observed to be increased after 2009. However, the increase was not constant and there were fluctuations between the years (2009-2013). Fertilization rates for IVF on the other hand, did not show significant differences throughout the years (2009-2013). Although the comparison of fertilization rate between IVF and ICSI methods is not scientifically accurate, IVF fertilization rate was observed to be lower than ICSI fertilization rate. TFF rates for both methods were found to be low.
