In today's globalizing world, Lean and Six Sigma are two of the most successful management approaches. However, with ever increasing competition, many companies are started to utilize the fusion of Lean and Six Sigma rather than implementing them individually. In other words, neither Lean nor Six Sigma has been considered as an adequate to be a market leader by companies. The main purpose of this study, therefore, is to deeply investigate the key reasons behind the Lean and Six Sigma utilization in an integrated manner. In order to achieve this aim, in this research, the key points of Lean and Six Sigma are primarily emphasized through explaining the main essentials, methods and tools as well as the main advantages and limitations. Afterwards, based on their limitations, the main reasons behind their integration are investigated. Finally, comprehensive knowledge is provided on the importance of implementing the Lean and Six Sigma fusion in a proper way. All this research is created through utilizing the different experts' ideas in the literature and the questionnaires, which were sent to three different companies. In this study, in order to provide an effective research, the headquarters of Avery Dennison, Toyota and Ford in Turkey are critically analyzed. Since A very Dennison, which was utilizing Six Sigma, has been implementing Lean Six Sigma for the last five years, the first case study is created for the purpose of investigating the main reasons of this change. Secondly, since Toyota has only been applying Lean whereas Ford utilizes both approaches, the analysis of Toyota and Ford is made to demonstrate the superiority ofFord. The findings of this study demonstrate that Lean and Six Sigma, which are individually quite successful approaches, have different focus points, different methods and different weaknesses. With their fusion, organizations are enabled to overcome a competitive environment through combination of all the strengths and the elimination of all the limitations. While the process speed, cost and quality can considerably be improved, companies can satisfy the customers in a best way. However, all the requirements of both approaches should primarily be considered and fulfilled in a proper way to obtain all these expected results.
