Özet (Çeviri)

The continued rise of the ruling Ottoman dynasty, which had emerged in northwest Anatolia around 1300 and conquered new lands and several significant fortresses, in areas ranging from Byzantine to the Balkans, prompted a Western response to what was known as the Turkish threat. This response became more organised following the after the fall of Constantinople in 1453. This work focuses on fifteenth century evaluations of the Turks as a threat to civilization as well as to religious values. It identifies the military, intellectual, religious and diplomatic backgrounds informing Western responses and discusses the manner in which popes, commentators, and princes acted upon their understanding of the Ottomans and the threat they represented. Letters, traveller's notes and books from the fifteenth century form the basis of the evidence presented here to support the responses to the sultanate. The work investigated the accuracy with which contemporary Western commentators described the sultanate's military profile, gauged its strengths and weaknesses and devised ways in which to exploit those weaknesses. It examines the intellectual and religious responses made by the united Christian powers, highlighting the beginnings of a union between the Christian princes, to fight the common Ottoman enemy. The forging of political alliances between the Christian states and other non-Ottoman states is also discussed in light of the attempt made by Pope Pius II to instil unity and agreement between the Christian states at Mantua. Therefore, in view of evidence presented, the dissertation will both consider and evaluate the arguments for and against the responses to Turkish power.
